I've had this pc for a few years and now my hard drive is failing and I need a back copy of my os so I can add it to a new hard drive. Is there a way I can get a backup disk because the system image recovery has me locked out.

Greetings,

Welcome to the forum.

I am not a HP employee.

You might be able to get HP factory recovery media from Computer Surgeons or Best2Serve.

HPE PCs (jogging my memory on this) usually shipped with Windows 7 or Windows 8.

You don't need HP Recovery media when running Windows 10 (W10).

You can reinstall W10 by creating installation media at this (Link).

Install W10 on the new storage device. Select I don't have a product key.

W10 should activate when you are connected to the net.

I hope you have data backups. You will lose data if you do a clean W10 installation.

You could try cloning the operating system from the current HDD to the new drive (Link to instructions). Cloning success depends on the condition of the old HDD.

Regards
