When trying to download software for a new HP OfficeJet 3830, I encountered the following error:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER32\Software\MicrosoftIE\Main\FeatureControl\FEATURE_BROWSER_EMULATION

HP Technical support downloaded drivers for a 9800 series printer.  The printer works, but I cannot scan because it has no scanner software, apparently.

I posted this in the support forum, and received a couple of answers, but they have not solved the problem.

Please help?

THe correct full feature driver for your printer is here: http://ftp.hp.com/pub/softlib/software13/COL61240/mp-147826-1/OJ3830_Full_WebPack_1119.exe

And you can use the basic print and scan driver if you have trouble installing the full feature: http://ftp.hp.com/pub/softlib/software13/COL61242/mp-147828-1/OJ3830_Basicx64_1119.exe

We (the HP Technician and myself, separately) have already tried installing the correct drivers for my printer, several times.  Each time I receive the error I listed on my post.  The HP Technician's solution was to download drivers for the 9800 series printer, which apparently does not have a scanner - so I have no scanner.

I tried using the Windows 7 Fax and Scan (suggested by another user in the printer forum where I posted), but it is not finding the scanner, because its scanner software is not downloaded.

What can I do about the Registry error?

Sounds like you've alredy been down a rocky road with this one. After looking at what was already out there there for realted errors, I believe this error is caused because the HP software does not have permission to write a value at the HK address in the registry. The value it is trying write is probably "HPScan.exe" with REG_DWORD value of 9000 (0x00002328) ... <this is what is on my Windows 10 system.>

The problem is likely permission-based... but there is the possibility of some kind of corruption or malware induced issue as well.

Things to try:

  • After you download the file from the link I gave you, find setup.exe from the latest folder in the  %temp% folder,  right click it and select install as an adminstrator.
  • Open regedit, make a backup of your registry and browse to the key shown in the error. Right click the key and look at the permissions. Set the permissions to allow writing to this key. See if you can manually add the  REG_DWORD value I describe above. If you cannot add a key - you have some kind of permissions problem on your system.

Hope this helps.
