Pavilion 23
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

My original hard disk failed and I am replacing it.  What do I need to do to fully recreate and re install windows 10 PRO on the new devices.  My concern is I have a digital license for this device (originally Windows 8 upgraded to Windows 10).  I do not have and have not used a Microsoft Account to sign into my desktop, it has always been a local account.  I think the license key is retrieved from the bios during reinstall, is this correct and if I have a CURRENT WINDOWS 10 ISO disk, will this reinstall correctly and find the digital license?  Will the setup create all of the required Hard drive partitions or is there and docs related to performing this part of the function.  Please help...

Hi:

It shouldn't be a problem.

Make the bootable W10 USB installation media with the media creation tool from the link below, or use the bootable DVD you created.

Download Windows 10 (microsoft.com)

You should be asked to select the version of W10 you want to install.  Select W10 Pro.

Then you will be asked to enter a product key.

Select the 'I don't have a product key' option, and W10 will install and automatically activate once you are connected to the internet.

Windows will automatically set up everything they way it needs to on the new drive.

In addition to Paul:

Microsoft has just released a new ISO and new Media Creation Tool (MCT) including November update!

Boot from the medium and run the installation. On the Setup-Page "Where do you want to install Windows" select "new". That allows you to determine the size of your Windows Partition.
120 GB is usually enough. (So calculate 1024 x 120 = 122800 MB and fill in this number) Then go on. In the end you have some unallocated space that can be partitioned later from Windows
If your C-Partition is too big and you want to reduce the size later, you have the problem with the Recovery-Partition that has to be recreated. In the end you have 2 recovery partitions. One behind the windows partition and one at the end of the disk.
