HP EliteDesk 705 G2 Desktop Mini PC
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Just bought a HP EliteDesk 705 G2 Desktop Mini PC second hand. Now I saw that BIOS version is quite old and I want to update to the latest version. I do not know the BIOS password so how do I reset the password? I have tried to push the CMOS button but this does only seem to reset the BOIS configuration but not the password. I have also tried the CMOSPwd program with no result. The last thing I will try is to resetting the password jumper. But if this doesn´t work what options are left for resetting BIOS password?

Hi:

If removing the P/W jumper doesn't work, according to the service manual, you will need contact HP technical support for further assistance.  In the USA/Canada, the HP business PC support number is 1-800-334-5144

See chapter 8, page 110 of the service manual at the link below...

As I understand, it won´t work if the BIOS setting Stringent security mode is enabled? Or do I misunderstand the manual?

"Stringent security is a mode where there is no physical bypass of the password function. If enabled,
removing the password jumper will be ignored. To enable this mode, change the security setting Clear Password Jumper in Password Policies to Ignore.
If you lose or forget the password when in stringent security mode, the system can only be reset by System Management Command. This is a way for HP Service and Support to provide a secure method to access the BIOS and command a password reset for a speciƭcally identiƭed unit under the direction of the owner. This scenario may not be covered under warranty."

So i need to verifyt that Stringent security mode is not enabled on the computer before I remove the jumper 🙂

Hi:

That is correct, except you can't verify that stringent security is enabled because you can't access the BIOS settings.

You will know that stringent security was enabled if removing the clear P/W jumper doesn't clear the P/W.

Aha, Ok. So I won´t even be able to see the BIOS settings without BIOS PW? I thought that I at least could see the settings but not be able to change any?

I'm pretty sure you won't be able to see or do anything if you are getting a power on password prompt.

Again, it really doesn't matter.

Removing the P/W jumper always works if the stringent security setting wasn't enabled.

So what options do I have left then?

The guidance in the service manual tells you to contact HP technical support for further assistance, which you have seen as you posted that information above.

I have already provided you with the contact number for Canada and the United States in one of my previous replies.

Ok, thanks.

You're very welcome.

I hope they can help you out.
