I need help with my USB 3.0 drives.
I've been chasing this problem for 2 days and HP support suggested I do a BIOS reset using the Win/B key system.
Doesn't work. I turn the computer off, press the Win and B keys, turn the computer on and the first thing that comes up is my log-in page. If I continue pressing the Win/B keys, that's what is entered as my password.
The real problem is I have a new Seagate 5TB portable HDD that I purchased to back-up my computer. Unfortunately, none of my 5 USB drives on my desktop will open the HDD. If I go to Control Panel, it is listed under Devices. If I open Device Manager, it is listed there. Nothing I do will open the HDD on my desktop. I know the computer recognizes the HDD and it is working because the power light is on and I can feel it working. However, when I plug the HDD into the USB on my HP laptop, it opens normally.
I have asked Microsoft, Seagate for help in determining why my computer won't open it. Nobody has a solution.
I just spent 2+ hours with HP Support on their FB page and the agents final suggestion was to reset the BIOS via the key method. Doesn't work.
Does anybody in the community have any ideas on this? I certainly would like to keep the HDD but if my desktop won't open it, I will have to return it.
Thanks for your help
Jack

@simmaly -- do other USB devices work properly, when connected to any of the 5 USB sockets on your computer? Keyboard? Mouse? Older USB memory-stick (USB 2, not USB 3)? Printer?
Any "USB 3" device should "down-shift" itself, when connected into a "USB 2" socket.
Does your HP laptop have USB ports that are labelled "USB SS" ("super speed" -- meaning USB 3) ?
Does your device work on the HP laptop when connected to "USB 2" sockets on the laptop?
When connected to "USB 3" (or "USB SS") sockets on the laptop?
P.S. When somebody says "update the BIOS", I say "no, unless your computer has a problem, and the documentation with the BIOS update states that applying the update will fix EXACTLY the problem that you are experiencing". It is too easy for a BIOS update to "fail", turning your computer into a "brick".
Do you have a newer USB memory-stick that uses "USB 3" ? Does it work when connected to a "USB 2" port on your computer?
