Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

I have a Hp laptop with Windows 10 22H2 64 bit. My SanDisk camera cards suddenly stopped working.  When I plug them in the laptops SD card reader, they go undetected. I don't see a SD card in device manager either.  I thought that I should download a new driver from the Hp website but my specific windows 10 22H2 isn't listed in the operating systems and so I don't know what drivers to install.  Any ideas? Thanks

Hi @FlipPhoner

Welcome to the HP Forum.

Not seeing a USB error in Device Manager is usually a pretty good indicator the device may have failed. Or you have a hardware problem from the MB to the card reader.

Windows provides all USB drivers so USB drivers would not be available from HP.

Have you tried restarting the PC?

Have you verified the SD cards work in a different PC?

Regards

Thankyou. Yes, the SD cards work in the cameras they came out of. I restarted the computer and no change. The cards are also in the unlocked position.  I use the cards once a week, the issue appeared last week suddenly.

Hi @FlipPhoner

My pleasure.

I would say you have a hardware problem. It would probably be a MB problem since you have a Laptop.

You could buy an external USB card reader at Amazon.  This reader should work unless you have additional MB USB problems.

You could verify a hardware problem by backing up data. Then do a Windows reset or a HP Cloud Recovery if your PC qualifies for a cloud recovery.

Same symptom after reinstalling Windows would confirm a hardware problem.

Ok that's good insight.  Would upgrading to Windows 11 do the same thing as backing up and doing a Windows reset?  Thanks in advance by the way. You don't know how refreshing it is talking to a real person! "I think."

Hi @FlipPhoner

My pleasure.

I am a real person. 😀

I would not do an in place upgrade because we are trying to see if you have a Windows problem or a hardware problem.

An upgrade may only move a Windows problem from one OS version to a different OS version. You don't want to add additional complexity to this situation.

You could try a clean W11 install, after backing up data, if your PC supports W11. You may see additional issues if your PC does not support W11.

I would do the W11 upgrade after you solve the USB problem.

Hi @FlipPhoner

You can get W11 installation media at this Link if you want to try W11.

Don't do an in place upgrade, do a clean install using the Media Creation Tool.

Ok I went to the Microsoft website and followed the instructions on doing exactly that. Windows 10 has been reset and installed.  The cards are still not recognized by the computer.  What's the next step?  Thanks

Hi @FlipPhoner

My pleasure.

You have confirmed your Laptop has a hardware problem since the SD cards work in other devices but are not detected by your PC.

The USB card reader is integrated in the MB.

I suggest purchasing an external USB card reader at Amazon.  This reader should work with your SD cards unless you have additional MB USB problems.

You installed W10 using USB media so you do have other functioning USB ports.

Apply compressed air to the card reader ports. Maybe you have some debris in the ports.

Let the PC sit for a while (moisture and electronics don't play well together). Then try the card reader again.
