We have a HP Pavilion 590-p0100na desktop PC - Windows 10 which is about 6 years old.  The computer was working fine until a couple of weeks ago when it suddenly developed two problems.  Whether they are related we don't know. 

 

The first is that the PC powers on as soon as you put the electric plug in the socket and switch on at the wall, i.e. you don't have to use the switch on the PC itself (and no we don't turn the computer off by simply unplugging it, it is always closed down properly on the PC first, then unplugged).  

 

The second problem is that  as it powers up, we see several messages.  The first is:

 

The CMOS checksum is invalid. The CMOS will be reset to the default configuration, and the computer will restart. Afterwards, please check the BIOS Setup options to see if they can change.

The next message appears and disappears very quickly but with the help of my phone camera I can see it shows the Processor type, processor speed, L1/l2/l3 cache size, memory size, channel A channel B, BISO revision dated 4/20/23 (I can reproduce this in full if necessary but as it is only briefly showing on the screen I feel it may not be relevant to the problem).

 

After the above it goes to the sign in screen but once the password is put in it says:

 

This sign-in option is disabled because of failed sign-in attempts or repeated shutdowns.  Use a different sign-in option or keep your device powered on for at least 2 hours and then try again.

 

We then have to wait at least an hour, sometimes more, before it will allow us to sign in.  After that the computer works fine, no problem at all.

 

So after searching on the internet for a solution we have replaced the CMOS battery (no change) and restored the BIOS (by switching off PC, pressing and holding the Windows + B key and simultaneously pressing the power button).  After it had run through the process, we were back at the sign in screen, unfortunately the problem persisted.

 

We are not tech minded (replacing the battery and restoring the BIOS was a new adventure for us!), so we are at a loss as to what to do next.  Any help you can give would be much appreciated.

I have never dealt with multiple failed sign-in attempts.

 

Good troubleshooting steps when replacing the CR2032 CMOS battery and doing a BIOS recovery.

 

You might want to try installing the latest BIOS update, sp147406.exe, for your PC which is available at this Site.

 

Your PC may have more than one issue since it powers on without additional user input other than connecting the PC to AC power. This could be a power supply problem. EDIT, or a MB problem, or a faulty power button.

 

Does the PC randomly shutdown while in use?

 

Also check hardware. Faulty RAM or a failing storage device can cause strange errors.

 

Start the PC. Repeatedly tap "ESC".

 

Select "F2". Run system and component tests.

Many thanks for your reply.  We installed the BIOS update from the link you gave but unfortunately this didn't resolve the issue.  We then did the system and component tests and everything said "passed" except one item - Hard Drive/SSD Optimized DST Check: NOT AVAILABLE.  

In answer to your query re the power, no the PC doesn't shut down randomly, once it is up and running it is absolutely fine.  We have also tried plugging another PC into the same socket and that worked as it should.  It's a real mystery!
