Hi @RedHarley,
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
If your HP TouchSmart 320 desktop computer is running slowly and takes an excessive amount of time to start up, coupled with issues like a line running across the screen, here are some troubleshooting steps you can take to address these problems:
1. Check for Hardware Issues
Inspect the Screen:
- Line Across Screen: If the line is persistent and visible across different screens or applications, it might indicate a hardware issue with the display or graphics card.
Run Diagnostics:
- HP Hardware Diagnostics: Press Esc during startup to enter the Startup Menu and select F2 for Diagnostics. Run a full system test to check for hardware issues, especially with the hard drive and memory.
Check Connections:
- Ensure that all cables and connections are secure, especially if you are using an external monitor.
2. Improve Startup Time
Disable Startup Programs:
- Windows 10/11: Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager, go to the Startup tab, and disable unnecessary startup programs. This can help reduce the time it takes to boot up.
Clean Up the System:
- Disk Cleanup: Use the built-in Disk Cleanup tool to remove temporary files and system junk.
- Search for Disk Cleanup in the Start menu, select the drive to clean, and follow the prompts.
- Uninstall Unnecessary Programs: Go to Control Panel > Programs and Features and uninstall any software you no longer need.
Check for Malware:
- Run a Full System Scan: Use your antivirus software to check for and remove any malware or viruses that could be slowing down your system.
3. Optimize System Performance
Update Drivers:
- Graphics Drivers: Go to Device Manager > Display adapters, right-click your graphics card, and select Update driver.
- Other Drivers: Ensure all other drivers are up to date, including chipset and network drivers.
- Windows 10/11: Go to Settings > System > About > Advanced system settings. Under Performance, click Settings and select Adjust for best performance or manually adjust visual effects.
- Ensure your Windows operating system is up to date by going to Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update and checking for updates.
4. Check Disk Health
- Open Command Prompt as an administrator (search for cmd, right-click, and select Run as administrator).
- Type chkdsk /f and press Enter. Follow the prompts to check and fix disk errors.
5. Perform a System Restore or Reset
- If you have a recent restore point, you can revert your system to a previous state.
- Go to Control Panel > System and Security > System > System Protection and select System Restore.
- As a last resort, you might consider resetting your PC. This will reinstall Windows and can help resolve performance issues.
- Go to Settings > Update & Security > Recovery > Reset this PC. Choose whether to keep your files or remove everything.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
