HP ENVY 27-p000 All-in-One Desktop PC series (Touch)
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

I am having an issue with the storage on my PC.

I cant install updates to the system as always I receive notifications saying I have no storage space.

This is despite my Storage settings being adjusted back in 2016 to send all new storage to my D drive where I have ample storage space it wont allow me to do Windows and System updates as it says I have no space.

My C DRIVE has 118gb used of 119gb

My D Drive only has 231 of 931gb used

I recently got a blue screen  Windows system error from windows that I think is due to the fact I havent been able to put new updates on my pc. Luckily I was able to get back into my PC but want to avoid a complete system shut down can anyone help?

According to Microsoft, those system-updates MUST be stored on the 'C:' drive, which is 99% full.

There is nothing that anybody can do to override that decision by Microsoft to establish that requirement.

Start by checking what's stored where and what can be possibly deleted / moved.

To be honest I find 128GB as a system drive quite silly nowadays taking into account rather cavalier attitude of all software makers (which is another story but I digress). On my PC with sort-of similar arrangement space used on C: drive exceeds 120GB - and because my PC was originally delivered with 128GB SSD as a C: drive, my first decision was to purchase 256GB SSD and clone systen disk onto there.

Have you run the Windows "Disk Cleanup", selecting the "clean-up system files" option?

That will delete older versions of Windows.

In the "root" of the 'C:' drive, you should see the 'Windows' folder.

But, is there any other folders that start with 'Windows', e.g., 'Windows.old' ???

Those are the previous versions of Windows, and can be deleted.

Thank you but my issue is not really an issue of having no space.

I have lots of space the issue I have is how the space and storage organisation works.

When I go to the disk management menu it breaks down my storage as follows......

DISK 0 partition1 CAPACITY 360mb free space 360mb - efi system partition

DISK 0 parition 4 CAPACITY 828 MB free space 828mb -Recovery partition

Windows C: capacity 117.96 gb free space 725mb - Primary partition

😧 DRIVE capacity 931.39 gb free space 700.46 gb - Primary partition

THE GRAPHICAL VIEW shows that DISK 0  is  made up of the Windows C drive and the Disk partition 1 & 4

Is the issue that becuase my c drive is the windows drive any updates and system updates need to go to that drive when being saved and cant function on the d drive?

>>> My C DRIVE has 118gb used of 119gb

That leaves just 1 GB, equivalently 1000 MB, as "free".

Note the 'GB' and the 'MB' units -- you have less than 1 GB of "free" space within that partition.  Ouch!

> Is the issue that because my c drive is the windows drive

> any updates and system updates need to go to that drive

> when being saved and can't function on the 😧 drive?

Yes.  All those updates add files into the 'C:\Windows' folder, even though your 😧 drive has lots of free space.

Please follow my advice, and run that "Disk Cleanup" utility, and tell us the results.

Thanks tried that and it deleted a little bit from the C;drive but not enough to complete the windows updates. Im still confused why with so much space on my d drive and the d;drive selected as the place where all new material gets saved it wont let me do system updates and says I have no storage space when clearly I do.

Running Disk Cleanup is certainly a good idea - and indeed make sure you select 'clean up system files' as well.

Also, download this chappy:

https://www.tweaknow.com/PowerPack.php

Open it, go to Windows Cleaner / Disk Usage Analyzer - and run it on disk C:. It will show you the breakdown of what's sitting where exactly.

You may even share details with us here if you need further help...

Another thing: you may want to check how much space is assigned to System Restore points - I think 20% is a default setting, worth adjusting accordingly...
