HP Pavilion Desktop PC TP01-2000a (2Z6C9AV)
Microsoft Windows 11

My HP Pavilion Windows 11 desktop is exhibiting very strange scrolling and cursor behavior. When I try to scroll on a web page or type on a document or a spreadsheet the cursor or pointer keeps jumping back to the top of the page or the beginning of the sentence. Sometimes everything will work fine for a few minutes, then I'll hear a notification sound (like a harp) and the cursor jumps back to the top. I verified updated drivers on my mouse, then installed a new mouse to no avail. I did a system restore to undo the latest Windows update but that didn't help. I did a thorough virus scan. I managed to boot into safe mode but the issue persisted. Even in File Explorer I can't select any file but the first one in a folder. I am now unable to do any work on my desktop.

I would appreciate any advice on how to fix this.

Greetings @cadre

Welcome back to the Forum.

I remember seeing strange mouse behavior such as you're seeing back in the late 1990s and early 2000s.

You have tried a different mouse.

Have you tried each mouse in all of the PC's available USB ports (front and back) to see if the problems persists?

The sound you are hearing could be caused because the MB USB controller is disconnecting or there is a problem with the USB port. This could be a hardware problem.

Check your PC's hardware using HP Diagnostics as follows:

Start the PC. Repeatedly tap the "ESC" key.

Select "F2". Run extensive system and component tests to confirm: a drive problem, a memory problem, or other component problem.

Check System Files:

Open an Admin command prompt as follows:

Open Search then enter "command prompt". Right-click on the search result.

Select "Run as Administrator".

Enter the following commands, one at a time. Wait for each command to complete before running the next command.

DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth note: the PC must be connected to the network when using the DISM command.

Enter the next command to verify system files are okay.

sfc /scannow

Restart the PC to check for stability.

You could also try a non-destructive W11 in-place upgrade. Let me know if you want to try this.

Hi Bill_To,

Thanks for your reply. I had previously done the DISM......RestoreHealth and the sfc/scannow. I'm currently running the system and component tests. I moved the mouse connection to a front port. I haven't had a cursor jump yet but my desktop has been off for about a week now so I'm not sure if the move has made a difference.

I'll post back with any results.

Thanks again.

The problems with the cursor persist. If I shut the desktop down for a few days it’ll work fine for several hours after I boot up, then the cursor jumps back to the upper left position and I can’t do anything. Nothing seems to work.  In desperation I did a system reset, losing all my installed apps. After I was back up everything seemed to be working fine but a couple of hours later the cursor went crazy again.

I’m at my wits end. My last resort would be to do a total factory reset but that would mean copying all my data (an awful lot) to my laptop with much less storage.
