i bought a HP slim desktop for my wife, It is super slow and I'm trying to figure out why. Here are the list of problems:
1. When I try to add the computer to my HP dashboard it will not accept it. When I try to use the dashboard for support I get an error message.
2. Processor: Intel Pentium Silver 2.00ghz
3. Memory: Samsung 8192 mb ddr4
4. Storage: WD 238.47 gb
Can I add memory and if so how much and what specifically?
It is connected by ethernet cable directly to the router.
Internet speed is: DL 448.6 UP 865.5
I am not a techie so you'll have to dumb it down for me. My wife and I are 70/71. Be easy.

Hi @sjw231
Welcome to the HP Forum.
I'm also 71. We have a common point of reference.
Is the HP Slim PC brand new? A specific HP Product Number would be nice to have so I can check your new PC's specs.
I don't know why the HP Dashboard is acting up. It could be temporary.
Adding memory might help somewhat.
Having 16 GBs of memory is usually a good starting point. Your PC may be sharing the available 8 GBs of system memory with onboard video if your PC does not have a discrete graphics card.
An Intel Pentium Silver processor would be a bottleneck in overall PC performance.
I'm guessing you have a SSD if your WD drive capacity is about 250 GBs. A SSD is good to have to improve PC performance.
Your Internet speeds are good.
I would say: limited system memory and the Intel CPU would be adversely affecting system performance if you have a SSD. A legacy, platter HDD would further degrade system performance.

Hi @sjw231
Thank you for the additional info.
It would still be good to know your PC's specific product number per request in my first response.
I can tell you the Intel Pentium Silver (J5040) processor is a mobile part. This means the CPU is soldered to the MB FCBGA1090 CPU socket and would be difficult to upgrade.
I can only guess the following without looking at HP's specs for the PC:
1. Your PC may have an external power brick. This would preclude installing a discrete graphics card,
2. You might be able to swap in two higher capacity memory modules. I can't verify this without a specific product number,
3. Your PC probably has a 250 GB: SATA SSD or PCIe NVME SSD. This is good.
So your component upgrade options are somewhat limited.
I doubled the RAM on my wife's Laptop and swapped in a SATA SSD a couple of years ago. Her Laptop could be similar to your PC's configuration. It did not help much.
An underwhelming CPU plus integrated graphics will degrade PC performance.
