I received a notification that appears as an HP pop up window suggesting I install System Mechanic on my computers

It is not HP software -- 

"Mechanic" has been around for years --

Were it mine to do, I'd remove it, mark it as unwanted, search it out (on the system) and get rid of it.

 

Perhaps you dropped into a random website and picked up the pop-up there.

 

The pop-up might have ridden into your system on a Not-HP software you downloaded.

 

Perhaps take a look at your browser history and the permissions.

 

Watch where you go -- 

Be aware that Not-HP and Not-Microsoft sites might be happy to "add" whatever they like to your experience.
