HP Omni 120-1333w
Microsoft Windows 8.1 (64-bit)

I keep getting this error code when trying to transfer my files from computer to back up external hard drive…   Error Code: 0x80070570 Unexpected Error   File or directory is corrupt and unreadable  .  I have an Omni All in One 123-1333w

with Windows 8.1 64 bit     I have tried turning everything off and unplugging the external hard drive but it still gives this error message repeatedly over the course of the past week.   My external hard drive is a Western Digital My Book Essentials that plugs into the USB port on my PC.  I also tried plugging it into another USB port but it does the same thing.  Other issues leading up to this is my PC has been running very slow ,files are hard to open, freezes up , fan or something runs fast and is loud at times.  My PC internal hard drive is close to full  only 1.37 GB free and 306 GB used ( I have a lot of digital photos on my PC) ).  I'm afraid my PC is about to crash and I don't want to lose my files so I was attempting to back them up on the external hard drive.  It was taking a long time (sometimes an hour to transfer about 5-10 folders at a time then it started giving me this error code ERROR: 0x80070570.  It says my files are corrupt and unreadable. Some will no longer transfer to external hard drive at all and some may only be partial.  What can I do to fix this transfer problem so I don't lose my files

Sorry, but I don't have very good news for you ...

Based on your description, it sounds like the drive is already failing to the point that some files have already become corrupted -- and unfortunately, you are unlikely to be able to recover those.

The more you use this drive, the more corrupted it will become -- worsening your chances of getting anything off it.

Your best bet for recovering data now is to do the following:
1) Remove the hard drive from the PC
2) Purchase a USB-to-Hard Driver adapter kit, example:

USB-Drive-Adapter.jpg

3) Download and install this utility on a working PC: http://www.majorgeeks.com/news/story/recover_data_in_3_steps_with_minitool_power_data_recovery_free_...
4) Connect the old drive to the working PC
5) Run the data recovery utility to see what can be retrieved from the old drive.

If that tools does not find what you need, an alternative is Recuva: http://www.piriform.com/recuva

And, if that does not work well, the best tool out there is this one, but only the trial version is free:  http://www.file-recovery.com/

I'm not sure what you're telling me is bad. Do you mean my external / back up hard drive is bad or do you mean is the PC's internal hard drive is bad???

*I'm not trying to get files off the external hard drive but at this point I think I can still get the few that I might need.   What I need to do first is find a way to back up the files from my Desk top PC because its's almost out of storage space and is not running right.

*So if its the external hard drive that's bad then I need to purchase a new one  so that I can back up files from PC desk top to the new external hard drive.

*I orginally thought i could remove some seldom used files or music from my PC and store on external HD to free up space on my desk top.   But I'm now thinking that's not a good idea either because if the external goes bad the files are still lost.

*If I understand,  you are telling me to get that USB adapter device to transfer files from external to internal???

*I don't think I should put any major amounts of files on my PC desktop until I back up the files that are on it now.   But either way what I need to know the most at this point is which hard drive is bad?  Is it the external back up harddrive or is it the desktop internal HD that is bad?                                     Thanks Amy Edixon  LightkeeperAmy@msn.com

Based on your comments, I would guess that the INTERNAL drive is failing because you said in some cases, the files you retrieved from it were already corrupted.
