Systems that came with windows 8.x (not upgraded from a previous os) all have the serial number embedded into their bios
and will activate upon first contact with the MS licensing servers
windows 8.x systems upgraded to windows 10 will receive a DIGITAL LICENSE from microsoft upon first contact with the MS licensing servers, also after the first win 10 install/activation, all future win 10 installs can be done directly without first installing win 8.x as the DIGITAL WIN 10 LICENSE is now tied to that systems motherboard
if windows 10 installs without errors but crashes upon it's first startup , simply restart in safe mode and read the logfile to see where the crash happened while it was starting
https://www.tomsguide.com/how-to/how-to-boot-into-windows-10-safe-mode

as a rule of thumb, uninstall any antivirus or printer drivers when upgrading a OS.
