Has any one run into the error message when applying Windows 11 update 24H2 "Intel RST VMD Controller 476F"? I could not find any information on Intel or HP. Microsoft compatibility tool did not find anything wrong with my system but the installation would not go through.

Hi @DCLJPC

Welcome to the HP Support Community! We're here to help you get back up and running.

The Windows 11 24H2 update error referencing “Intel RST VMD Controller 476F” typically indicates a missing or incompatible Intel Rapid Storage Technology (RST) driver, especially for systems using VMD (Volume Management Device) mode.

To resolve this, you’ll need to manually update or inject the correct storage driver before installation.

Why This Error Occurs

Systems with Intel 11th Gen or newer CPUs often use VMD mode to manage NVMe SSDs. If the Windows 11 installer doesn’t detect the correct RST VMD driver, it halts with a compatibility error—even if the Microsoft tool shows no issues.

Step-by-Step Recovery

1. Confirm VMD Is Enabled

  • Enter BIOS (press Esc or F10 at startup).
  • Look for VMD Controller under Advanced > Storage Configuration.
  • If enabled, your system requires a compatible Intel RST VMD driver.

2. Download the Correct Intel RST VMD Driver

Visit HP’s driver page:
HP Drivers and Software

Search for your exact laptop or desktop model.

Download the latest Intel Rapid Storage Technology (VMD) driver under Storage or Driver-Storage.

If unavailable, use Intel’s official driver:

3. Inject Driver During Windows Installation

If you're using a bootable USB to install Windows 11 24H2:

  • Copy the downloaded RST VMD driver folder to the USB drive.
  • When the installer says “No drives found” or throws the error:
    • Click Load Driver
    • Browse to the folder and select the .inf file
    • Proceed with installation once the drive appears

HP also provides guidance for this scenario:
No Drives Found During Windows Installation – HP Support

4. Update BIOS and Chipset Drivers

Outdated firmware can block driver recognition.

  • From HP’s support page, install:
    • Latest BIOS
    • Chipset Driver
    • Intel Management Engine Interface

Restart your system and retry the update.

If You’re Updating from Within Windows

  • Use Windows Update Assistant or Media Creation Tool
  • Before launching the update, install the RST VMD driver manually
  • Restart and retry the update

Let me know your exact HP model and whether you’re installing via USB or Windows Update—I can guide you through the driver injection or compatibility override if needed.

Hi @Hawks_Eye Thank you for the detailed reply.

When I check in the Device Manager, the controller shows up and has the latest driver. Windows Update troubleshooting  also shows the latest driver exist. This means it IS enabled in BIOS right?

You are very welcome @DCLJPC

Thanks for confirming that the “Intel RST VMD Controller 476F” appears in Device Manager with the latest driver. That’s a strong indicator that VMD is indeed enabled in BIOS—especially if the controller is actively managing your NVMe SSD.

However, even when the driver appears up to date in Windows, the Windows 11 24H2 installer may still reject it if:

  • The driver version isn’t digitally signed or recognized by the installer
  • The installer lacks the VMD driver during boot (especially with USB installation)
  • The BIOS firmware doesn’t fully support the update’s storage handling

Here’s how to move forward confidently:

1. Confirm VMD Is Enabled in BIOS

Even though the controller shows in Windows, it’s worth verifying directly:

  • Restart your PC and press Esc or F10 to enter BIOS.
  • Navigate to Advanced > Storage Configuration.
  • Look for VMD Controller or Intel VMD Technology.
  • If it’s Enabled, your system requires the correct VMD driver during OS installation.

2. Reinstall the Intel RST VMD Driver from HP (Not Windows Update)

Windows Update may install a generic version. For compatibility with 24H2:

  • Visit HP Software and Driver Downloads
  • Enter your exact HP model (e.g., Pavilion 15-eg2000, Spectre x360, etc.)
  • Download the Intel Rapid Storage Technology (VMD) driver under Storage
  • Install it manually and restart

If unavailable, use Intel’s official version:

3. If Installing via USB: Inject the Driver

If you're using a bootable USB for Windows 11 24H2:

  • Copy the extracted RST VMD driver folder to the USB
  • During installation, when prompted with “No drives found” or error:
    • Click Load Driver
    • Browse to the folder and select the .inf file
    • Once the drive appears, continue installation

HP’s guide: No Drives Found During Windows Installation

4. Update BIOS and Chipset Drivers

Outdated firmware can block driver recognition:

  • From HP’s support page, install:
    • Latest BIOS
    • Chipset Driver
    • Intel Management Engine Interface

Restart and retry the update.

Let me know your exact HP model and whether you're updating via USB or Windows Update—I’ll guide you through the precise driver injection or compatibility override if needed.

You're doing everything right by checking thoroughly, and we’ll get this update through.

Hi: Thanks again for the detailed reply.

My system is a HP ENVY Desktop PC TE02-0000i RCTO Base Model (should have supplied this earlier). Re: your instructions:

1. I checked the boot menu and there was not an Advanced but I was able to find the RAID controller. It listed that I did not have RAID which is correct but the controller appeared recognized.

2. I was able to download the RSV VMD driver from HP support. Previously I wasn't able to locate it because I used Windows 11 23H2 as the filter and for some reason that excluded the driver. This time I just used Windows 11 and was able to find the driver, and extract it to my HD.

3. When I when into Windows update and attempted to manually update the driver and browse to the folder where the driver download was extracted, Windows was looking for an .inf file which was not in the main extracted folder. Several subfolders contained .inf files but I was not sure which one to pick.

This is where I got stuck. Help!

Hi Haw_Eye:

PS, this all started during a Windows Update, from 23H2 to later updates. I was not using a USB boot device to update.

Hi Hawk_Eye:

I managed to update the Intel RST VMD driver from the latest on HP support site. I have by now completed all that you have helpfully outlined in your post. However, I am still getting an error when I run Windows Update.

I have an HP ENVY Desktop PC TE02-0000i RCTO Base Model btw.
