We bought a new desktop pc 2 months ago, it’s now barely usable- every single activity results in a blue screen error.
Stop code: IRQL NOT LESS OR EQUAL
What failed: ntoskml.exe
We did a full factory reboot this morning and setup as a new pc, once rebooted I opened Microsoft Edge and the blue screen was back instantly.
I’ve tried most suggestions online, checking for memory problems, restarting, resetting. Nothing works… it’s barely been used since we bought it.
Any suggestions or is it likely a faulty PC?

@BeckyDJ, Welcome to the HP Support Community!
Thanks for reaching out about your query regarding Blue Screen Error: IRQL NOT LESS OR EQUAL!
We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.
The blue screen error with the stop code "IRQL NOT LESS OR EQUAL" typically indicates a problem with a driver, hardware interrupt, or system file conflict. Here's a detailed guide to help resolve the issue:
Steps to Resolve:
Update Device Drivers:
- Use HP Support Assistant to check for and install any pending driver updates. This tool can often detect specific driver issues and replace them with stable versions.
- Ensure you're using the latest drivers for components like graphics, network, and audio by visiting HP's Support and Driver Downloads page for your specific model.
Run System Diagnostics:
- Use HP PC Hardware Diagnostics (UEFI) to run tests on your hardware components. These diagnostics can identify issues with memory, processors, and other hardware.
- To access diagnostics:
- Turn on or restart your computer.
- Quickly press Esc, then F2 to enter the diagnostics menu.
- Run necessary tests to ensure all hardware is functioning properly.
Check for Software Issues:
- Verify Windows Updates: Ensure your Windows operating system is fully updated using Windows Update.
- Perform a Clean Boot: This helps in identifying if specific software is causing the problem. Disabling non-essential startup programs temporarily can isolate issues.
- Press Windows + R, type msconfig, and press Enter.
- In the System Configuration window, go to the "Services" tab and check "Hide all Microsoft services". Then, disable all services.
- Go to the "Startup" tab, open Task Manager, and disable all startup items.
- Restart your computer and check if the problem persists.
Hope this helps!
Take care, and have an amazing day!
