Sorry, but just to be clear; "windows wont detect my usb device", are you refering to an external USB device you have plugged into your Z420, or is the error present with no USB devices attached?

If the error is caused by pugging in an external USB device, then what type of device is it?

If the error is present, and you are certain no external USB devices are connected, (excluding your standard USB keyboard and mouse), then it sounds like a possible system driver issue. Go to the HP Z420 Support page, then navigate to the Software, Drivers and Firmware page. Ensure your OS selection is correct, then download and install the Manageability Driver Pack.

so i installed the Manageability Driver Pack and it was working well at first then extracted then nothing happened. is there anything else i gotta do, something went wrong or what?

You didn't mention if this is an internal or external USB device, so I will assume it is an internal USB device/driver.

Go to device manager and right click on the device showing an error. Select Update Driver Software from the drop down list, then the Browse my computer for driver software. Click the browse button and navigate to the SWSetup folder, usually C:\SWSetup. Ensure the Include subfolders option is ticked then click next.

it says that the best driver for it is already installed

Is the error showing with no USB devices plugged in? I.e. even if you remove all USB devices, including the keyboard and mouse, is the error still present? Have you checked the USB BIOS settings under the Security tab?

Try downloading, installing and running the HP Support Assistant software. It may be able to identify what the problem is. While you're at it, also download and install the HP Performance Advisor software. Both are free. You can also view and edit any BIOS settings from within the HP Performance Advisor software.

FYI: Bookmark the HP Z420 Support page for more resources. Manuals, drivers, etc. Make sure you have the latest motherboard BIOS installed.

Is HP Support Assistant flagging up any errors?
