Hi,
TLDR: Is there somewhere I can get a good, working initial image for my machine?
All help appreciated!
Cheryl
A few days ago my pc began an automatic Windows update and a BIOS update was part of that. Either the BIOS update simply failed, or a power flicker here caused the PC to shut down. The first error I had was related to the missing/corrupt BIOS.
I downloaded BIOS files, new and old ones, from the support site but none would install because of wrong windows version. I wasn't too concerned about doing a fresh installation so I figured I'd do that rather than start down the "support" trail dealing with a BIOS issue.
I backed up my personal files using the provided options, just because I could, and kicked off the re-image. It looks like the windows installation completed since it's breaking during the later steps of installing outdated "bloatware" (sorry HP).
I can see the error, and as someone with a little experience playing with cmd/batch files, I can see how to route around it if I could edit the files. Well, I can edit them, but every time the machine restarts a "clean" (unworking) version of them is pulled from a read-only image, so the issue happens over and over and I can't get through a reboot. I'm not sure what remains to be installed once I get past the current error, but I don't think it's much.
I'm not sure the McAfee installation actually failed, since there are some path errors involved in the batch process -- for all I know the temporary "error file" placeholder that's put in place before the McAfee installation simply wasn't deleted properly after that piece installed, causing an error to be detected. Not sure.
Here is the top level log file provided in the dump, which includes the individual error file within it. I clipped some unimportant stuff so the top and bottom of the log is present (CTOError.log):

Hi:
Other than ordering recovery media for your PC at the link below, which may produce the same error, I recommend you clean install W10 using the media creation tool.
With the media creation tool you can make a bootable W10 USB flash drive installer, You will need an 8 GB flash drive for this.
https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10
After W10 installs, you can install the drivers and available software from your PC's support page.
Since the recovery partition didn't work, when you get to the screen that asks 'Where do you want to install Windows,' you might want to consider deleting all of the partitions on the hard drive, leaving just one partition of unallocated space, and then proceed to install W10
