Today we talked to an Xfinity tech who said that our operating system is not compatible with the new modem

we should get a hold of HP so they could remotely upgrade our operating system.

Nonsense!

If your computer is already running Windows 10, there is no available "upgrade".

Your computer: HP Pavilion Slimline 400-224 Desktop PC Product Specifications

Product number: F3D64AA
Release date: 3-Jan-2014
Country/region sold in: United States

Networking

Wireless LAN 802.11b/g/n featuring Single-band (2.4Ghz) 1x1

• Interface type: PCI express half-length mini card
• Data transfer speeds: up to 80 Mbps
• Transmission standards: 802.11 b/g/n
• Antennas: 1 internal antenna
• Single band: 2.4 GHz (b/g/n)

LAN: 10BASE-T

• Technology: Realtek RTL 8106E-CG
• Data transfer speeds: up to 10/100 Mb/s
• Transmission standards: 10BASE-T Ethernet

So, you have both "wireless" and "wired" networking options.

The wireless adapter has a lower maximum transfer-rate than the 100 Mbits/second of your wired adapter.

What network speed is your ISP providing?  25 Mbps? 50 Mbps? 100 Mbps? 150 Mbps? 1000 Mbps?

The "new" modem/router from the ISP probably can receive at any of these speeds.

However, the maximum speed between the modem/router and your computer is 100 Mbps, unless you purchase a 10/100/1000 Mbps network-adapter.
