I have tried both Linux Mint Cinnamon and Mate on my laptop with varying success. My laptop is the Stream 11 with touchscreen and the lid which flips over, fyi.
No matter how many times I tried new installs of Cinnamon, it always had problems which made it unusable, so I thought I'd try Mate as that seems to be a popular choice for HP Stream laptops. I keep having desktop configuration issues with this though, as there seems to be conflict between Compiz and Mate desktop utilities. Honestly, this is such a pain and no matter what I try to solve the issue, it always reoccurs. I could probably get by this by creating a new user and transferring to that account as the Guest account seems fine, but there is a chance of it happening again. Are there any setup recommendations for Mint, or is there a totally different flavour of Linux which works best for this laptop? I tried to go to chat/call but both options were unavailable... Thanks in advance. 🙂

I have the original Stream 11 from November 2014 (non-touchscreen) and have been running Linux Mint MATE 17.3 and now 18.3 without any problems. I guess I would wonder if it is the touchscreen that is giving you problems, can you possibly disable it in the UEFI system setup menu to rule it out?
