Monitor sometimes displays a "check cables" after it always displays "no signal".  I am using the same mouse,  keyboard monitor and microsoft XP that I was using when I replaced it all when support ceased for XP.

You would have to try the following to isolate the issue:

1) Replace the video cable -- if the problem continues, it's not the cable

2) Replace the monitor with a different one -- if the new monitor does not work, it's likely the video chip (or video card, if you have a separate video card)

3) Use this monitor on a different PC -- if it still displays the error message, then the monitor is going bad
