HP Compaq Elite 8300 Base Model Microtower PC
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Hello.

I have a HP Compaq desktop with the following specifications:

  • Model: HP Compaq Elite 8300 MT.
  • Processor: Intel i5-3470 (6M Cache, 3.20 Ghz).
  • Memory: 4 memory slots with a 4GB DDR3 1600 Mhz in slot 1.
  • OS: Windows 10 64-bit.

I want to add a memory stick of 8GB in slot 3 so I get in total 12GB of RAM (I know they don't match in size and I won't benefit from total "dual channel"). Now, my problem is that I don't know if this is possible or should a slot not have more than 4GB!

I'm saying that because the manual says that "To achieve the maximum memory support, you can populate the system board with up to 16-GB of memory configured in a high-performing dual channel mode", which let me suppose that maybe the maximum per slot would be 16/4 = 4GB.

But, when I use the Windows command: "wmic memphysical get MaxCapacity", I get 32 GB as maximum memory.

So, my two concerns are:

  1. What is the maximum supported memory for my model (I want this info for maybe future RAM upgrades)?
  2. What is the maximum RAM allowed per slot: is it just the Total_RAM divided by Number_of_Slots, or a slot can have more size provided the total for the slots doesn't exceed the maximum supported by the computer model?

Thank you very much.

Hi:

The max is 4 x 8 GB.  See page 41 of the quickspecs at the link below...The section under System Memory Support.

32 GB maximum memory support depending upon available number of DIMM sockets

I have two older 8200 Elite CMT's both running with 4 x 8 GB of memory.

They work great.

Hi, Paul. Thanks for your quick reply.

I followed the two links in the discussion you posted, but found that it's about another computer model and the the first link gave me a "403 Forbidden" error. Are the model provided in the link and the one I have equivalent?

You're very welcome.

Sorry about that.

I posted the wrong link for a different answer to a different question.

Now I need to check that other post and make sure I didn't post the link to the HP 8300 Elite quickspecs. 😊

I edited my post above with the correct link and reference.

Thank you very much, Paul.

Indeed, the manual from the link specifies that we can use 8GB sticks for a total of 32 GB; weirdly, it's more explicit than the manual I downloaded from the HP official site.

Anyway; I'm more confident now for buying a 8GB memory stick and installing it.

I have an additional question, if you don't mind:

My current RAM stick is 2Rx8 and the one I intend to buy is 1Rx8. Is it OK to have them both, or they should have the same rank and organisation?

Well, I checked my config in the Crucial website and all their suggestions for memory upgrade have the 2Rx8; so I guess that I probably need to find a 2Rx8 RAM stick to avoid any problem or at least to more optimize.

Have a great day.

You're very welcome.

The Crucial memory should work with the existing 4 GB memory you installed.

I have the same Crucial memory in my Dell Optiplex 7020 which also uses DDR3L-1600 memory and it worked fine.

Yeah, I think this Crucial stick is a good option. Thanks for the suggestion.
