Desktop 510-p192a
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

This desktop is brand new.  After initial turn-on, HP updates installed correctly, but Microsoft updates commenced, but froze at 57%.  I attempted to update manually, but this also failed.  No security had been activated, and Windows Defender is grayed out and cannot be turned on.  Web searches reveal this is a common problem, but I could not locate any practical fix.  Can someone please help.  This is not the only Win 10 machine I have with this problem, but this one is just out of the box.  Jill

Thank you for replying with this detailed response 😉

I appreciate your time and efforts,

It looks like the command prompt isn't recognizing the command, no worries, here's a few other things we can do to fix the issue:

  • Stop antivirus and VPN/Proxy software before the update.
  • You have to wait for the update to install, sometimes it takes hours.
  • If you see Windows Update error code, you can try recently released ‘Fix Windows Update errors‘ tool by Microsoft to fix this problem. Click here to access the fix (guided steps)
  • Type ‘Troubleshooting’ in the search. Now select View All in left side panel. Select‘Windows Update’ at the end of the open window. Run the troubleshooting. Restart your and try to update again.
  • You can also download and run the Windows Update Troubleshooter.

Welcome to HP Forums,

This is a great place to get support, find answers and tips,

Thank you for posting your query, I'll be more than glad to help you out 🙂

As I understand the Windows 10 Update is failing and the Defender is not available,

Don't worry as I'll be glad to help, however, to provide an accurate resolution, I need a few more details:

Did you retry after restarting the computer, to install all available Windows & HP updates using the HPSA?

What is the error code when the update failed? which update is it that isn't installing?

If the Windows defender isn't being updated, try the below steps:

Update Windows Defender using an elevated Command Prompt

You can also try updating Windows Defender using an elevated Command Prompt.

Right-click on the Start Menu button to open the WinX Menu.

In the WinX Menu, click on Command Prompt (Admin) to open an elevated Command Prompt:

Type cd /d “\Program Files\Windows Defender” into the Command Prompt and press the Enter key.

Type exe -signatureupdate into the Command Prompt and press the Enter key. This will initiate a Windows Defender update which, hopefully, will be successful.

Keep me posted,

If the information I've provided was helpful,

give us some reinforcement by clicking the solution and kudos buttons,

that'll help us and others see that we've got the answers!

Good Luck.

Thank you for replying so promptly.  Yes, I did restart the computer after HP had updated all of its drivers etc.  Since then I have tried to update several times and have a page full of failure notices.   There were several updaes listed originally, but the only one that appears now, is "2017-06 Cumulative update for Windows 10 version 1511 (which my computer is) for x64 based systems (KB4022714)" I know one of the other ones was the Malicious Software Removal Tool for June.  There is no sign of an error code, the update screen just sits there with the blue line now at 58% since the last retry.

Regarding Defender, I had to go to Windows System in the aps list to find the command prompt, and followed your instructions exactly, I think, and the message says  "exe"  is not recognised as an internal or external command, operable program or batch file.  Did I do something wrong.  I have a snip of the command screen if you want me to send it, but you woud have to tell me how.  Thanks, Jill 16
