Microsoft Windows 8 (64-bit)

I just recently had service work by HP. It was also reset back to factory. Before this happened my misconfig was set to Selective startup in misconfig. I can't remember if it came that way new or they put it back to my settings from my pc settings.

I've tried to change to Normal startup but it always restarts to Selective. It seems that I read somewhere that the All-in -one pc Win 8 is set to selective to make an easier startup.

Can you give your opinion on this. My pc is ready to update to 8.1. I just want everything correct before I move on with anything more after the factory reset. I have updated Win updates and Hp updates.

Thanks, I enjoy finding answers here.

Hello,

Thank you for posting in the HP support forum.

This has nothing to do with Win 8.1 upgrade so you can upgrade without issues of any kind with regards to msconfig.

This also has nothing to do with All-in-one PCs, its the same on tablets, notebooks, desktop PCs, etc...

Normal startup loads it all - services, drivers, original standard boot configuration.

Diagnostic start up is the name of the mode known as Safe Mode

Selective - you can choose to disable certain things - actually, there are many people who are on this - if you choose to stop/disable a "standard" service or some autorun program entry, etc.

With regards to the 8.1 update, here is an official HP article with some tips and instructions >> http://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c03847367

Thanks for your response and explaination. My question is how do I set the misconfig to Normal and keep it? Or maybe I should leave it well enough alone.

I had upgraded to the 8.1 before and it seemed very unstable or didn't seem like things worked well. I know this sounds very vague but I actually can't remember all the problems I had before I moved on to Win 10.  I am just trying to move forward now to upgrade to the Win 10 again after the reset to factory.

Thanks so much for your understanding and information.

Hi,

You can leave it as is - leave it like it is now - it doesn't hurt. This option changes on its own from Normal because something is changing the other settings with regards to Start up.

If you previously ran Windows 8 and then upgraded to 10 successfully and if this Windows 10 was activated successfully before, you can now directly install Windows 10.  Was this the case ? If YES, you can directly download Win 10 ISO from Microsoft site here >> https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10ISO

Once ready, burn the ISO to DVD using the Windows internal options >> http://www.howtogeek.com/80094/how-to-burn-an-iso-image-in-windows-7/

Finally, insert the DVD, restart the computer and boot from Windows 10 DVD to install Win 10 (using Esc button and F9  OR  http://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c03736054 )

** Note - if Windows 10 was not previously activated on this computer, then the above procedure will not work and you should first upgrade to Win 8.1 and then upgrade to Win 10 starting from inside Windows **
