How to fix a SMART hard disk error 301 on Windows 10 desktop after plugging in a new USB hub and new speakers because my old sb hub and speaker also caused this error but it allowed windows to work.  The new usb hub and speakers did something worse which is frustrating because I purchased the new items so it should work but it did not change anything but made it worse.  Windows 10 is not allowing me to UNDO anything.

Hi @LOISLANE3,

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out!

We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.

Sorry for the inconvenience caused don’t worry let me help you.

To better understand the issue, could you please provide a few more details?

  • The exact HP desktop model you’re using.
  • Whether the error appears immediately at startup or only after Windows loads.
  • If you hear any unusual noises from the hard drive (clicking, grinding).
  • Whether you’ve already backed up your important files.

Suggested Troubleshooting Steps

  1. Check BIOS Diagnostics
    • Restart your computer and press F2 or Esc repeatedly to enter HP’s diagnostics menu.
    • Run the Hard Drive Test to confirm if the disk is failing or if it’s a false alert triggered by peripherals.
  2. Disconnect External Devices
    • Remove the new USB hub and speakers.
    • Boot the system with only keyboard, mouse, and monitor connected.
    • This helps confirm if the error is related to external devices or the internal drive itself.
  3. Update BIOS and Chipset Drivers
    • Visit https://support.hp.com/in-en/drivers and check for the latest BIOS and chipset drivers for your desktop model.
    • Outdated firmware can sometimes misinterpret signals from USB devices and trigger SMART warnings.
  4. Check Windows Event Viewer
    • Press Windows + X → select Event Viewer.
    • Look under System logs for disk-related warnings or errors.
    • This can help identify if the issue is truly with the hard drive or a driver conflict.
  5. Backup Important Data Immediately
    • A SMART 301 error often indicates the hard drive may be failing.
    • Please back up your files to an external drive or cloud storage as soon as possible to avoid data loss.

I hope this helps.
