Hi @aljoh10,
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
Experiencing a freezing issue on your HP ENVY Desktop PC can be frustrating, but there are several steps you can take to troubleshoot and potentially resolve the problem. Here are some steps you can follow.
- Check for Software Updates: Ensure that your Windows 10 operating system and all your software applications are up to date. Outdated software or drivers can lead to compatibility issues and freezes. To update Windows, go to Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update.
- Scan for Malware and Viruses: Run a full system scan with a reliable antivirus or antimalware program to check for any malicious software that might be causing the freezing issue.
- Check for Overheating: Overheating can cause a computer to freeze. Make sure your desktop PC is adequately ventilated, and check that the cooling fans are working properly. Cleaning out dust from the internal components can also help with overheating issues.
- Update Drivers: Outdated or incompatible device drivers can lead to freezing problems. Visit the HP support website to download and install the latest drivers for your specific HP ENVY model.
- Check for Resource-Hungry Programs: Some programs or background processes may be consuming too many system resources. Use the Task Manager (Ctrl + Shift + Esc or Ctrl + Alt + Delete) to check for resource-hungry processes and end them if necessary.
- Check for Disk Errors: Use the built-in Windows utility "Check Disk" to scan and repair any disk errors. Open a Command Prompt with administrative privileges and run the command: chkdsk /f
- Disable Unnecessary Startup Programs: Some startup programs may contribute to the freezing issue. Use the Task Manager or System Configuration utility to disable unnecessary startup programs.
- Test in Safe Mode: Boot your computer in Safe Mode to see if the problem persists. If it doesn't, this may indicate that a third-party application or driver is causing the issue.
- Check for Hardware Issues: Test your hardware components, such as RAM and hard drive, for errors. You can use built-in Windows tools like Windows Memory Diagnostic and Disk Check.
- Restore to a Previous State: If the problem started after a recent software installation or update, consider using System Restore to revert your system to a previous working state.
- Clean Install Windows: As a last resort, you may consider performing a clean installation of Windows 10. This will wipe your system and install a fresh copy of the operating system.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
