hp touchsmart 600-1390
Microsoft Windows 7 (64-bit)

My hp touchsmart pc 600-1390, was auto shutting off after few mins of startup. I stopped using this for few years as could not find any fix, recently from a old post someone replied if i can clear my fans and that fixed it.

As part of clean up i installed windows 10 from USB media and lost my windows 7 key. Microsoft said they will activate windows 10 if i can get old windows 7 key from HP.

I am not able to reach anyone at HP to help in this regard. Any suggestions are greatly appreciated.

Hp do not provide an activation key if it is usually lost
But normally if you have a desktop computer, you should have this key displayed on one side of the box.

I have all the original packing and manuals and i searched and do not see the key. I only see product ID and serial number.

Is it an all-in-one computer?
There I can not tell you exactly if so, and where the label is, but there are some on the tower, and the laptops, I saw the two examples directly, but not for this type of model!
Maybe it was removed, if you can't find anything at all
It is easily distinguished, it is generally green/ blue  with the mention windows !

If nothing, I can't do anything more for you, keys are not too expensive, maybe that will be the solution
You can buy a product key, but without installation support, much less expensive

I have to assume the Windows 7 install was not upgraded but the Windows 10 was installed without Windows 7 being present.

That would be why it is asking for the Windows 7 product key.

Also assuming it was a OEM install, those keys are not the same as what would be on the sticker, if it was there.

Send me a PM

In reply to @Prométhée  question -  the OEM key that is used to install Windows 7 from the factory is not the same key that was put on the stickers used to do a reinstall using a Windows 7 install disk.  That key on the sticker will activate a Windows 7 install, but it is more like a retail key.  The OEM key is basically the same for many installs on many units where the key on the sticker of a desktop, or laptop is only for the user's one time use.

FYI: If you use a key finder software on a factory install and if it also has the sticker still attached, you will see they are not the same.  This info only applies to Windows 7.

Thx @TheOldMan

I've never heard of that, it's curious!
Anyway, it doesn't change anything, the activation is done and the computer is usable.
Solution that I tested directly, and that we have proposed many times successfully on the FR forum, when the user had to reinstall with a DVD other than the HP recovery kit
