I have an All in One device (HP 24-r005la) where I want to replace the current HDD running Windows 10 with an SSD. However, I’m unable to properly start the Windows installer from a USB drive.

The system detects the USB and starts the boot process, but as soon as the Windows logo appears, it immediately restarts. I also tried using an SSD with a pre-installed version of Windows, and the same issue happens, it reboots at the Windows logo.

I’ve tested all available USB ports with the installer, but the behavior remains the same. I created the bootable USB using Rufus with both FAT32 and NTFS formats, using GPT partition scheme. I also tried using Microsoft’s official Media Creation Tool, but that didn’t work either.

Interestingly, when I boot with an Ubuntu image, it starts without any issues. Also, if I reconnect the original HDD, the system boots and runs normally.

The BIOS is updated to the latest version available. I’ve formatted and installed operating systems on many devices before, but I’m not sure what setting or configuration might be causing this issue with this particular machine.

Any help or guidance would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

Hi,
The solution was to access the BIOS recovery and run the process. Once completed, I was able to start the installation and complete it.

But the strange thing was that before recovering the BIOS, it always showed the boot logo and restarted after 2 seconds, but the already installed Windows booted correctly. Additionally, if I applied the BIOS update, it would reboot and say it had completed successfully. Upon reboot, the update wasn't applied, as if it were in read-only mode.

@gilbertlvr1993, Welcome to HP Support Community,

Thank you for posting your query; I’m here to help by guiding you through steps to resolve this issue

You're clearly experienced with system setups, and you've already gone through the key steps—nicely done. The fact that Ubuntu boots without issues but Windows installation doesn't, and that the system boots fine from the original HDD, narrows this down to something specific about how Windows interacts with either the SSD or the BIOS/UEFI settings on that HP All-in-One (HP 24-r005la).

1. Secure Boot + Legacy Support

Enter BIOS (ESC > F10 at startup).

Disable Legacy Boot (if enabled).

Enable Secure Boot (if disabled).

Set Boot Mode to UEFI Only (not UEFI + Legacy).

Make sure the boot order puts the USB at the top.

SATA Controller Mode

Check if the BIOS SATA configuration is set to IDE or AHCI.

Go to BIOS > Advanced > Device Configuration.

Set SATA mode to AHCI.

Save and reboot.

If it’s set to IDE or RAID, Windows might crash during the install process, especially on SSDs.

Try HP Cloud Recovery Tool

HP provides a recovery tool that creates a compatible installer for HP devices.

Download it on another PC:

I hope this helps.
