Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Hi, 

My grandfather has passed away recently and my uncle now owns his pc. The hard drive crashed and I replaced it. Now when performing a clean install of windows 10 it gets stuck on the just a moment loading screen after going through most of the installation.  The circle of dots to indicate it is loading even stops spinning.  Can you please assist?

At one time cloud recovery was available.  Try and see if it is still on the server.

HP is removing cloud recovery for system over 5 years old. You may want to get a copy of the cloud recovery before it is too late.  Cloud recovery provides all the custom HP drivers.
Go to the below site and enter your product ID including the 3 characters after the # character
If you have cloud recovery you can restore your system using a 32gb flash.
It may take an hour or more to create the recovery USB.

Does the windows 10 install ask for a storage driver or does it just hang?


Have you run diagnostics?
Tap the ESC key after powering on. . Tap it once a second after you see the LEDs on the keyboard flash. When you see the startup menu, press F2 to run diagnostics.
Do not allow any updates if disk or memory fail, especially a BIOS update.

Let me know what you find out.

Yes I ran all the hardware tests and they passed fine. It just hangs up and doesn’t ask for anything at all or give any errors. Cloud recovery would not find my model.

Please provide the Product ID or exact model name for better assistance. Preferably the full product ID including the characters after the # symbol as a bios fix may be needed I am also unsure of your exact model.  There are several versions of the '44

 

Go into the BIOS setup and press F9 or whatever function key or option is needed to set defaults on all menus.

Makes sure that secure boot is enabled and the date and time are correct.

 

Your system should be able to run windows 11.  Try the win11 install described below

 

Reference this article. Windows 11 can be easily installed on just about any windows 7, 8 or 10 system as an upgrade.

I have run it on some really old HP systems with no problem.

For a new system that has UEFI bios and GPT but does not meet all requirements, Windows 11 can be installed using the Rufus trick.

Get Rufus here

Download Windows 11 with this link and use an 8gb or larger USB.
Windows 11 does not expire and Microsoft just leaves an activation reminder on the screen.
Otherwise use the windows 10 license.  It will be automatically activated on HP win10 systems.


Configure Rufus to use UEFI boot and select the option that creates a local account
so as to avoid the Microsoft email login. Use options shown below:

Uncheck the "Set regional options" if you are creating the USB on another system that has a different OS than yours.
Do not install 11 Pro if you are licensed for 10 Home.

To do a clean install then boot the USB else just insert it and find and run "setup"

You have to click "start" before those options show up.

If you do an upgrade you may not need to hunt for HP drivers. if you do a clean install of 10 or 11 then your Product ID can be used to find missing drivers.

What version of BIOS is your system?  Go into BIOS setup and look for a ROM id or family. If it is 8433 then there is a bios available here

I believe this is your motherboard from looking at the parts list here.

Do not update bios if you fail any of the F2 diagnostics.

 

Possibly this system has drivers that match your system better than the one I first found.

 

Try that win11 install using Rufus

For some reason it won’t let me create the bios usb.  Every time I run the exe file I get a driver error on my win 11 machine that I’m using to try to create the bios flash usb. Is there a way to provide me with and iso of the flash USB so I can just use Rufus to setup the usb ?

I had already tried these steps.  All of the system and memory tests passes. Still freezes at 94% install on first boot. The problem I am running into is I am unable to create a bios flash usb due to the program to create them causing a driver error in windows 11. Blocked by windows defender.

There is a problem with the PC or the flash if the install freezes at %94.  Never update a bios on a system that has problems. Instead of freezing at %94 it will freeze at %0

 

There are 4 different BIOS listed  here under windows 10.  There appears to be 4 versions of the ROM used in your laptop.

According to the version history here, the last bios that actually did anything useful was F.42.  All the rest were security updates that slow down your laptop. 

 

It is always dangerous to upgrade bios. Unless there is a real need and the HP support assistant requests the upgrade

I would not do it. Look at the BIOS revision history and see if an upgrade is useful. Updates that improve security are needed in a  corporate, industrial or military environment.  Just my 0.02c opinion.  

 

Take out the memory chips, use an air duster to clean the motherboard,  Put the memory back in.  Either get another USB flash or use windows to do a long format (scan or chkdsk) of the USB.

 

Go into the BIOS and press the function key (F7 ?) or whatever key sets defaults on the laptop.  Make sure that secure boot is enabled and the date and time are correct.   Try to install windows 11.
