I'm working with a piece of industrial software that has not been updated to windows 10. It requires connectivity to actual hardware and so I'm not sure if just opening it in compatibility mode would work...

Compatibility mode you can try, but it rarely works for many software or device
As we indicated to you, you can install Xp with an hdd disk installed in SATA, under condition:
be able to switch to ide mode in the bios!
or integrate the ahci sata driver, during the installation of windows xp
you have several methods, @Paul_Tikkanen seems to be able to help you
the technical / english mixture may be complicated for me
but there are many tutorials on the net
install windows xp, in ide mode
install xp in sata mode, but at some point of installation give required ahci / sata controllers
install xp, with a created cd, we usually use the nlite software, in order to integrate the necessary sata ahci drivers

Hi, @web-fusion
a USB FDD = USB Floppy Disk Drive, which is one of the methods you can use to install the SATA AHCI driver at the beginning of the XP installation process.
Slipstreaming the AHCI controller drivers is another way you can install XP in AHCI mode.
How to Slipstream Your SATA Drivers Into a Windows XP Installation CD Using nLite (wikihow.com)
The third method is to change your computer's drive controller setting from AHCI to IDE, and install XP without any problem, and then you add the SATA AHCI driver in IDE mode, restart the PC, and change the drive controller setting back to AHCI.
What I need to know from you is the description and hardware ID of the SATA AHCI controller your PC has.
You can find the name of the SATA AHCI controller, by going to the device manager, click to expand the IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers device manager category, and there you will find the name of the SATA AHCI controller.
Then I need the hardware ID for that controller, which you can find by reading the information at the link below for how to find it. The guide is for an unknown device. You follow the guidance by doing the same with the SATA AHCI controller.
