My computer will not start up. Black screen no bells or whistles . Can’t get to the battery to take out. Has anyone else had this problem? This computer was bought in may 2025

Hi @Skye104

Welcome to the HP Support Community! We're here to help you get back up and running.

Thank you for already checking the basics and sharing that the screen stays black with no sound or signs of life. I understand how unsettling it is when your computer won’t respond at all—especially when it’s relatively new.

Let’s walk through a few steps to help bring it back to life.

1. Perform a Hard Reset (for non-removable battery models)

Even if you can’t remove the battery, most HP laptops support a hard reset using this method:

  • Disconnect everything: Unplug the power adapter and remove any USB devices or external displays.
  • Press and hold the power button for at least 15 seconds. This drains residual power and resets the embedded controller.
  • Release the button, then plug in the power adapter only (no peripherals).
  • Press the power button once to try turning it on.

2. Check for Power LED or Charging Light

  • Plug in the adapter and look for a charging LED near the power port or on the side of the laptop.
  • If there’s no light at all, try a different wall outlet or adapter if available.

3. Try a Key Combo to Wake the Display

  • With the laptop plugged in, press Windows + Ctrl + Shift + B.
This shortcut resets the graphics driver and may revive a black screen.

4. External Display Test (if available)

  • Connect the laptop to an external monitor or TV using HDMI or USB-C.
  • Power on the laptop and press F4 or Fn + F4 to cycle display modes.
  • If the external screen shows output, the issue may be with the built-in display.

5. BIOS Recovery (if keyboard backlight or fan briefly responds)

  • Turn off the laptop.
  • Press and hold Windows + B, then press and hold the power button for 2–3 seconds.
  • Release all keys and wait up to 60 seconds.
If the BIOS recovery screen appears, follow the prompts.

If the laptop remains completely unresponsive—no lights, no fan, no display—it may indicate a power delivery or motherboard-level issue. You’ve already done the right thing by trying to power it up and observing the behavior.

Let me know if you notice any subtle signs—like a flicker, fan spin, or LED blink—when pressing the power button. That can help narrow down the next steps.

Take care, and have an amazing day!
