Hi @P1603
Welcome to the HP Support Community!
Thanks for posting your query! We're here to help you get back up and running.
The issue you're describing seems to point to a hardware or system problem that's delaying the boot process. Here's a detailed troubleshooting guide to help resolve this:
1. Check Power and Hardware
- Inspect the Power Source:
- Ensure your laptop charger is functioning properly. Try using a different charger if possible to rule out power delivery issues.
- Remove Peripherals:
- Disconnect all external devices (USB drives, external monitors, etc.) and then power on the laptop. Faulty peripherals can sometimes interfere with startup.
2. Perform a Hard Reset
- Turn off the laptop and disconnect it from the power adapter.
- If your laptop has a removable battery, take it out. Hold the Power Button for 30 seconds to drain any residual power.
- Reconnect the battery (if applicable) and power on the laptop.
3. RAM and Storage Health
- Reseat or Test the RAM:
- If you're comfortable opening your laptop, check the RAM modules. Remove them and reinsert them securely to ensure proper connection.
- If you suspect a failing RAM module, test with one stick at a time.
- Test the Storage Drive:
- A failing HDD or SSD can cause slow startup. Use diagnostic tools like chkdsk or third-party software such as CrystalDiskInfo to check for errors.
4. Safe Mode Boot
- Boot into Safe Mode:
- Restart the laptop and press F8, Esc, or Shift + F8 repeatedly during startup (depending on your system).
- If it boots faster in Safe Mode, there may be a software or driver conflict causing delays.
5. Update or Reinstall Drivers
- Check Drivers:
- Open Device Manager and look for any yellow warning symbols indicating driver issues.
- Update your critical drivers (chipset, graphics, etc.) from your laptop manufacturer’s website.
- Windows Update:
- Ensure your system is up to date by visiting Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update.
6. Disable Startup Programs
- Reduce the number of programs loading at startup:
- Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager.
- Navigate to the Startup tab and disable unnecessary programs.
7. Reset BIOS Settings
- Access the BIOS/UEFI during startup (press F2, Esc, or Delete, depending on your laptop model).
- Restore the BIOS to default settings and save changes.
8. Test for Overheating
- Clean the vents and fans using compressed air to prevent overheating, which might halt the startup process.
- Consider applying fresh thermal paste to the CPU if it's been a while since maintenance.
9. Check for System Corruption
- Open Command Prompt (Admin) and type:
- sfc /scannow - This scans and repairs corrupted system files.
- chkdsk /f - This checks and fixes disk errors.
10. Reinstall Windows
- If all else fails, backup your important files and perform a clean installation of Windows 10 or Windows 11. This can eliminate any persistent software conflicts or OS corruption.
