@mortyp, Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
Here’s a step-by-step guide to help the customer recover files from their old Windows 10 PC hard drive and transfer them to their new HP All-in-One Desktop PC 24-cr1000i running Windows 11:What You’ll Need:
- The old hard drive (already removed)
- A SATA to USB adapter or external hard drive enclosure
- The new HP All-in-One Desktop PC 24-cr1000i
Step-by-Step Instructions:
Step 1: Connect the Old Hard Drive to the New PC
- Use a SATA to USB adapter or an external hard drive enclosure to connect the old hard drive to your new PC via USB.
- Once connected, Windows 11 should automatically detect the drive and assign it a drive letter (e.g., D:\ or E:).
If the drive doesn’t show up, open Disk Management (Right-click Start > Disk Management) to check if it’s recognized but not assigned a letter.
Step 2: Access and Copy Your Files
- Open File Explorer and navigate to the connected drive.
- Browse to:
- C:\Users\[Your Old Username]
- Copy folders like:
- Documents
- Pictures
- Desktop
- Downloads
- Any other personal folders
If you get a "Permission Denied" error, right-click the folder > Properties > Security > Advanced, and take ownership of the folder.
Step 3: Paste Files to Your New PC
- Open your new PC’s user folder (C:\Users\[Your New Username])
- Paste the copied files into the appropriate folders.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
