had to replace hard drive... how do I install operating system on the new hard drive? Do I need a key?

You can use Cloud Recovery tool

 

         https://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c06162205

 

or perform a fresh installation Windows 10 using

 

        https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10

 

or go directly to Windows 11 (this is up to you):

 

       https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows11
