HP 8200 SFF desktop
Microsoft Windows 7 (64-bit)
Product Name: HP Compaq 8200 Elite Small Form Factor PC
Operating System: Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

There are 2 line items (see attached photo) n Device Manager with a yellow "!" icon,
meaning the device driver is missing:
  1. "USB Controller
  2. "Unknown device"

I looked at the HP driver download page:

but can't figure out what device drivers are needed.
Any suggestions on how i can sort this out?

Anytime, Ted.

I just checked the file contents of that driver, and it does not contain support for the hardware ID you posted.

Googling further gives me conflicting information.  Some say it's Renesas, which we now found that it isn't.  Some say it is NEC.

See if this one works.

This package provides the NEC Electronics USB 3.0 Host Controller Driver for the supported notebook models and operating systems. The driver enables USB 3.0 devices.

https://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp54001-54500/sp54479.exe

I can't explore the file contents because it won't break down.

If that one doesn't work, there is this one I found which is labeled as a Renesas

I downloaded and save it but I could not explore its file contents either.  Same issue as with the HP driver.

However it is too big for me to attach here, so I uploaded it to my Skydrive folder.

I have shared the link below and you want the Zip file labeled Renesas uPD720201-3.0.23.0

Hi:

Please post the hardware ID's for the devices that need drivers.

Use this guide for how to find the hardware ID for a device...

Hi Paul,

Thanks for the HW ID tip and link to instrs, very useful!

Here's the 2 sets of hw ID's (in ascii form, and also as a screen capture):

#1/2) "unknown device" (per Device Manager):

                  HW ID = USB\VID_0B97&PID_7732&REV_0210

Image41a.HW.ids.Unknown.Device.number.one.jpg

#2/2) USB Ctroller (per Device Manager):

                 PCI\VEN_1912&DEV_0041&SUBSYS_00000000&REV_03

Image41b.HW.ids.USB.Controller.missing.drivers.jpg

I did a google search and it took me to some 3rd party pages with driver downloads, however those pages included the scary disclaimer, "This is for PC model <something other than my HP 8200 SFF", so these drivers may not work on your PC

===> Is there a way to figure out which drivers (from the official HP driver site, https://support.hp.com/us-en/drivers/selfservice/hp-compaq-8200-elite-small-form-factor-pc/5037931 ) correspond to these HW ID's?

Thanks in advance!

You're very welcome.

The USB controller should not have needed drivers as they were supposed to be included with W10.

You can see if the W7 driver from your PC's support page works.

Try manually installing the driver if the auto install method doesn't work.

This package provides the Renesas Electronics USB 3.0 Host Controller for supported models running a supported operating system.

https://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp53001-53500/sp53291.exe

The other driver appears to be for an O2 USB smart card reader.

There is no such driver listed on the support page.

I did find this driver by doing an internet search.  I have zipped it up and attached it below.

You can try it and see if it works.

Wow Paul, thanks for the amazingly quick follow-up, much appreciated!

Good news and bad news...

Good news: the USB Smart Card reader driver you (attached) installed just fine 🙂

Bad news: the Renesas Electronics USB Controller driver refuses to install 😞

I tried it 4 different ways:

Method #1/5) running sp53921.exe :

  1.  downloaded sp53291.exe from the URL in your reply
  2. ran sp53291.exe
  3. FAILED:  "This program might not have installed correctly.  If this program didn't install correctly, try reinstalling using settings that are compatible with this version of Windows".   (tcj: it did indeed fail, as indicated by the Device Manager still showing a yellow "!" next to the USB controller)
  4. clicked the button labelled:  "Reinstall using the recommended settings"
  5. FAILED:  no error, but the USB controller still shows a yellow "!" error, in Device Manager
  6. I rebooted, and tried this method again.   Still failed.

Method #2/5) running HP Support Assistant :

  1. ran HP Support Assistant
  2. let it install a newer version of HP Support Assistant
  3. clicked "Check for updates"  <---- I thought it would notice the yellow "!" warning in Device Manager for the Renesas USB controller, and download and install the driver.
  4. FAILED:  "no updates available"

Method #3/5)  Device Manager, technique #1:

  1. right-click Computer | selected:  Manage
  2. select: Device Manager
  3. select "Universal Serial Bus (USB) Controller"  (it had a yellow "!" warning next to it)
  4. right-click | Update Driver Software...
  5. select:  Search Automatically
  6. FAILED:  couldn't find the driver

Method #4/5) Device Manager, technique #2 :

  1. select:  Browse my computer for driver software
  2. point it to:  C:\SWSETUP\SP532\64Bit
  3. FAILED:  "WIndows was unable to install your Universal Serial Bus (USB) Controller"

Method #5/5) Device Manager, technique #3:

  1. Device Manager | right-click "USB Controller"  | Update Driver Software...
  2. select: Browse my computer for the driver
  3. select: Let me pick from a list of device drivers on my computer
  4. FAILED:  in the list of manufacturer names, "Renesas" does not appear

----

By the way, I'm running "Win 7 Pro, SP1", per winver.exe

==> any other thoughts on how I might get the USB Controller driver to install?

Thanks in advance,

-Ted

Hi Paul,

Apologies for my delayed reply, I was out of town for a few days.

Thanks for your continued assistance, much appreciated!

SUMMARY: the second driver worked!  Thanks a million!!!

---- cut here for more details ----

The first driver (NEC Electronics USB 3.0 Host Controller Driver, https://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp54001-54500/sp54479.exe) appeared to install correctly (no errors from installation dialog boxes), but then 60 secs later a following error message dialog popped up which said:

"This program might not have installed correctly.

If it didn't, try reinstalling with settings that are compatible with this version of Windows"

and it had a button labelled:

     "Reinstall using recommended settings"

I check Device Manager and the USB Controller still had a yellow "!" (meaning driver problems), so I clicked the "Reinstall using recommended settings" button.   There were no further error dialog boxes, but... the Device Manager still showed a yellow "!".   I tried rebooting and reinstalling, got the same results.

I then tried the "Renesas uPD720201-3.0.23.0" driver from your Skydrive folder, and that one worked!!!  🙂

The yellow "!" box was gone, and I was able to successfully use that USB port (for the first time ever).

Thanks a million!

Cheers,

-Ted

Anytime, Ted.

Glad to have been of assistance.

Save that driver in a safe place!

I had to search the corners of the internet to find that one.

Have a great weekend.

Paul
