Hi @rickymotorbrain,

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out about your query regarding your PC!

We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.

Try these steps:

Check Power Supply (PSU)

  • If your hard drive clicks off and the system shuts down, the power supply unit (PSU) might be faulty.
  • Try using a different PSU (borrow one if possible) to see if the issue persists.

Run Hardware Diagnostics

  • If you can access HP’s built-in diagnostics (press F2 at startup), run a full hardware test.

Hi @rickymotorbrain,

Thank you for the response.

Since you've already ruled out the hard drive and power supply (PSU) as the cause, here are some other possible reasons why your HP Pavilion a1310n is shutting down with a "Windows has shut down to prevent damage" message:

Faulty RAM (Memory Issues)

Try reseating the RAM:

Turn off the PC, unplug it, remove the RAM sticks, and reinsert them firmly.

Test with one stick at a time:

If you have multiple RAM sticks, try booting with just one at a time to see if one is faulty.

Run a Memory Test:

Boot into Windows Memory Diagnostic (press F8 → select "Memory Diagnostic" and run the extended test).

Overheating or CPU Issues

Check if the CPU fan is running properly.

Clean out dust from heatsinks and fans.

Reapply thermal paste on the processor (if needed).

Enter BIOS (Press F10 at startup) and check CPU temperature.

If it’s too high (above 70°C at idle), overheating might be the issue.

BIOS Settings or Corruption

Reset the BIOS:

Turn off the PC, remove the CMOS battery (a small coin-cell battery on the motherboard), wait 5 minutes, and put it back.

Check for BIOS Updates:

If your BIOS is outdated, updating it might help.

I hope this helps.
