kb5034441 win 10 update from Jan. 2024 still fails to load. Does anyone know a way an average user can fix. So far I have only seen a lot of technical jargon involving steps that could really mess up my computer

The only way that I know of that will get that update to install would be to follow the directions Microsoft published to correct the problem.
Seems a bit complicated to me, so what I did was to simply hide the update from showing up in Windows update.
It's not a fix per se, but you won't have to deal with the update gumming up your Windows update app anymore.
If you don't want to go through the proper steps to get the update to install, run the Microsoft Hide Windows Update utility that I zipped up and attached below.
When you run the utility, it will search for updates waiting to be installed.
Check the box to hide the KB5034441 update that won't install.
The utility will run again and report the problem is 'Fixed.'
Close out of the utility, restart the PC, go to Windows Update, click on the failed update that won't install (if it is there) and it should disappear.

I changed the partition, but I didn't follow MS advice as that looked rather obscure. Instead I used the free version of a commercial partition management app (AOMEI - I don't particularly recommend this one over others, but it worked for me.) I had to shrink the Windows partition slightly, and move it so the free space gained was next to the recovery partition. This took quite a long time. I then increased the size of the recovery partition so it took over the free space. I did this as a separate job. The app could have queued both jobs and done them together but I thought that was more risky. Anyway it worked, the next try installed the update. But I am not impressed with MS requiring users to do things like that!
