Hi @nugget-cloud,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

If your HP laptop fan is making a strange noise, it could be due to a few different issues. Here’s a step-by-step guide to troubleshoot and address the problem.

Check for Obstructions:

  • Dust and Debris: Dust buildup can obstruct the fan and cause unusual noises. Use compressed air to blow out any dust from the vents and fan area.
  • Foreign Objects: Ensure nothing is blocking or obstructing the fan. Sometimes small debris or even hair can get caught in the fan blades.

Inspect the Fan:

  • Physical Damage: Check if the fan blades are damaged or misaligned. Any visible damage could cause noise and might require fan replacement.
  • Loose Screws: Sometimes, loose screws can cause the fan to vibrate and make noise. Ensure all screws holding the fan in place are secure.

Update BIOS and Drivers:

  • BIOS Update: HP often releases updates to address hardware issues. Check the HP support website for BIOS updates and follow their instructions to update.
  • Driver Updates: Update your system and hardware drivers, especially the chipset and thermal management drivers.

Run HP Diagnostics:

  • HP Support Assistant: Use the HP Support Assistant or HP PC Hardware Diagnostics to run a hardware check on the fan. This can help identify any issues with the fan's operation.

Fan Control Software:

  • Fan Control Settings: Check if you have any fan control software installed that might be misconfigured. Sometimes third-party software can interfere with normal fan operation.

Thermal Paste:

  • Reapply Thermal Paste: If you’re comfortable doing so, you might consider reapplying thermal paste between the CPU/GPU and their respective heat sinks. Over time, the thermal paste can degrade and affect cooling performance.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
