Recovery drive D default set up from the factory is 935GB while my C drive is only 237 GB.  My C drive is almost full and I am having issues with installing updates.  Does my recovery drive need to be so giant?  How much should I reduce it and give the C drive more space?

I am guessing you have a 256gb M.2 SSD and a 1.0tb HDD

you did not identify your system, but if it a gaming system and if you are running steam, then you can specify the imagery and data base to be on the "D" drive and the executable program on the "C"  This can make a huge difference in "C" space.

Try freeing up space

We can not provide specific amounts as that is different for everyone.

What you need to do is clean up a lot of stuff from your "C" drive and the safest way to do that is to download and install Wise Disk Cleaner -- which is free.  When you run that, it will provide options for removing junk files.
