What about using my external SATA drive to install Windows 10 on (trying not to buy anything if I can help it). Although taking the opportunity to have a new HD is sensible.
Is there a problem with Windows 10 and SATA drives? I read somewhere about needing IDE drives.
I spent the evening looking up threads for repartitioning my backup drive without losing data. Diskpart appears to zot the data.

Never believe anything that you read on the Internet.
The final IDE disk-drive was manufactured many years ago.
Maybe, 1% of 1% of 1% of computers running Windows 10 are running on an IDE disk-drive.

Hopefully, the partition that you want to "keep" is the FIRST partition on the disk-drive.
DISKPART can be used to delete the partition(s) "after" the partition that you want to keep, to create "unallocated" disk-space. Then, use the EXPAND command of DISKPART to "stretch" the existing partition to incorporate that unallocated space.

Thanks for your reply.
I checked my main hard drive with computer specs and it was indeed a SATA drive.
I a going to spend one more session on bootrec, etc, in case I messed up the first time. If that fails I will go shopping for a solid state hard drive (and mount for the bay) as you (and my computer geek friend) suggest, and install accordingly.
Re the diskpart, the unallocated space is in the second partition. I will work on making one partion of the drive so I can use it down the track.

Since my last post, received basically the same advice as you gave me.
I.e., Buy a 128Gb SSD and mounting bay, install Windows onto it, and make a backup of my files.
Although I have pulled my computer apart in the past, I have tried to put off this option for a number of reasons.
So tonight I worked on getting my backup external drive in working order. This was more complicated than I imagined.
Using DiskPart, I typed in the following commands (eventually, after Googling variouos symptoms of problems:
list disk
select disk 1
clean
create partition primary
active
format fs=ntfs label=sheryllbackup quick
and before the system would recognize it, I alo ended up doing:
assign letter=s

Continued...
Whilst researching the bootrec etc commands to fix the error, I stumbled across a neat thread which showed (somewhat) how to use Notepad to copy files whilst in recovery mode.
At first I got error 0x80004005 when trying to copy files to my backup drive. A check of the permissions showed that it was not readonly, so I had to assume that there was some other cause for the error.
I then tried a 128Gb USB drive as the copy to drive.
I successfully copied two directories that live on my C drive (note - in this recovery configuration C is D and D is C, and X is boot device).
Full of hope I tried the same thing with the C:Users file, but I got the 0x80004005 error again.
After reading and watching videos of possible fixes to this error, I decided it was a permissions problem, My USB drives were OK to copy to, bt some directories did not have permissions for just anyone to copy.
So, I went for the heavy hand and took ownership of all the files in my Username of the C: Users file
I think the command went like this:
in D:\Users directory: takeown /f sheryll /r /d y
This worked!!!
Back in Notepad, I managed to navigate to this file, tried to do the copy and it said my USB chip wasn't big enough.
I replaced it with my backup external drive (a better option in any case) and the copy worked!
Or should I say, is working, as it is still ongoing. Will keep you informed of future developments. If there are other files that I should back up, let me know.

Here's my post from Friday night, whic apparently didn't get posted.
Hi there, just to bring you up to date with my problem…
As well as saving the Users/Userid files, I also saved files I had placed on the C drive, scanner files, both Program Files, stand alone program files such as WS-FTP-LE, and the Windows font file. That about filled up my drive.
I tried one last time replacing ntoskrnl.exe with other versions I found, but received error messages, so reverted it back to how it was.
On 2 May I reinstalled Windows 10 from my installation chip. It took about 1 1/2 hours. I opted for Custom Install, and that produced a windows.old directory full of my current data.
Since then I have on and off installed various software applications. Most notable problem is trying to reinstall Windows Live Mail., which I am working on tonight. If I am ever successful in stalling Window Live Mail and getting my original messages back, I will let you know how I managed it.

Well, let me say that I am feeling discouraged after spending my weekend trying to deal with emails, both in the Windows Live Mail message store and configuring a current email client.
I have not been able to find a copy of WLM which will install properly. It apparently has been discontinued as of January.
I then installed Mozilla's Thunderbird, in hope that I can import my 100,000 odd emails to it. This led to me installing an improt/export addon, but no matter what I try with it, I cannot get anything readable imported into Thunderbird.
I did use a PCVARE demo program which converted 25 messages, but they want $49 for it (thought it was $69 when I looked a couple of days ago).
I tried a free Ruby script (eml2mbox.rb), but couldn't get it to work.
Tonight I tried using my husband's computer. I swapped the WLM Message Store folders and tried to export my emails, but he has WLM 2011 and the only options were WLM and M$ Exchange. Neither of these options were what I wanted. It was an ache to see my email accounts and emails all set up, and it makes me want to get a version of Windows that has WLM In it. Maybe I should reinstall Windows 7 and upgrade?
In other news, I tried to send a message with Thunderbird, and it failed with invalid password. I am in no hurry to import all my emails to Thunderbird if I can't send emails. I use the password in Webmail all the time, so am currently at a loss to fix this problem.
There are other headaches to deal with, such as installing Office and printer drives for my laser printer, but email has been a big issue and has slowed me down. Thanks for listening.

Yes, Microsoft pushed "Windows Live Essentials" to its "sunset" in January 2017.
But, see: http://www.majorgeeks.com/files/details/windows_live.html
for a 134MB download of "Windows Live Essentials 2012".
> Maybe I should reinstall Windows 7 and upgrade?
No. Windows Live Essentials has also been removed from the Windows Update repository.
> I tried to send a message with Thunderbird, and it failed with invalid password.
Most ISPs do not require a password when sending E-mail -- only when "checking for new E-mail".
Contact your ISP's support for the proper configuration for sending E-mail through their mail-servers.
> printer drives for my laser printer ...
If Windows supports the printer, it should automatically download and install the device-drivers, the first time that you plug-in the USB cable that connects to the printer.

@mdklassen - Thank you for persevering with solving my problems.
Re the drivers for the laser printer, it was just a matter of searching for the right ones with Google and installing them.
Re invalid password, I had configured new names for the servers from my webhosting company. However, with your option of installing WLM, I didn't pursue this problem.
I downloaded it and tried to install it. It mentioned Windows Live only and gave my 0 bytes to install as it said I already had Mail installed. However, after I took a break I came back to it and clicked on a few install options (some extras that come with the Mail package??) and let it install those, and, mira! there it was, Windows Live Mail!!! The licence agreement accept/decline were in German and I thought, here we go, but the next screen was in English!!!!
I have crawled around setting up my normal settings, checking that the new message file was where I expected it to be, and am now copying my mesage file over to the same directory (under Microsoft) but with a different name. I preferred this option instead of using the message store under the Windows.old directory.
So tomorrow morning if the copy is successful, I will change message stores and Bob should be my uncle!!! I will also hopefully be able to send and receive mail. If this all works, I will be forever in your debt!

Yes, it sort of worked. I could receive messages but could not send them (got an error in German). The solution was to uninstall WL Essentials, then reinstall with whatever features I wanted. I just sent my first email in 2 months!!
Thanks again!
