OMEN by HP Desktop PC - 870-090
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Hello, like many Omen owners. Widows says my Omen Desktop PC 870-090 will not work because of my 6th generation intel "core"  i7-6700k processor. Everything else will work.  IT SAYS!

I know about the iffy work arounds that may or may not work and that updates could be a pain, so my question is. Is there a processor that will work with W11 that can be swapped out?

I'm not sure how to find out what my mother board is because that may be an issue as well, but I am listing what I do know. I have looked for Omen articles that all are different models with different processors and some say it will work on  certain models and not on others. And thanks in advance to all.

Here is what I have:

Hi:

Your PC's motherboard cannot support any Intel 8th gen core processors which are the minimum W11 Intel desktop processor requirements.

I recommend that you give the following workaround a try, because you really have nothing to lose.

The below method by far is the easiest way to do an in place upgrade from W10 > W11, and I have no doubt that your PC should work just fine on W11 with the existing hardware.

I have upgraded at least a dozen different hardware unsupported PC's to W11 and they all work fine.

Watch this video:

How to Install Windows 11 on Unsupported PC in 2025 (New Easiest Method, No CMD)

Download the W24H2 ISO file and use that (3rd option).

Download Windows 11

You can download the free 7-Zip file utility from the link below. The top line is for 64 bit.

7-Zip

You'll have to repeat this procedure if and when Microsoft rolls out the new W11 builds because a PC that does not meet Microsoft's minimum W11 hardware requirements will never automatically get the update to the next build.

They have been releasing new W11 builds each October so far.

Other than that, your PC will continue to get the monthly cumulative and other updates.

That's only a minor inconvenience to have continued OS support beyond October of 2025.

If things don't work right on W11, you have 10 days to easily go back to W10 as long as you don't delete the W1 upgrade files or the Windows.old folder.

@Kris621,

[EDIT:] Welcome to our HP Community forum!

As @Paul_Tikkanen, already referenced, unfortunately, an Intel Core i7-6700K is the very best compatible processor for your Omen Desktop PC 870-090 .

But not to worry, there are a number of reliable and effective methods developed which would allow you to almost effortlessly upgrade your so-called "unsupported device" to Windows 11, such as this easy-to-follow YouTube instructional video shows: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lSrmhhigEhY&t=332s&ab_channel=Tips2Fix.

This method, in my opinion, is the best and most convenient way to upgrade to W11 on PCs like yours.  You don't have to mess with Rufus and a flash drive and such, as it uses a little-known Microsoft Server install backdoor.

Anyway, in the off chance you don't like W11, you have 10 days to roll back to Windows 10. After 10 days, unless you follow the steps outlined in this instructional video, you may need to do a fresh install of Windows 10. Either way, this video will show you what to do: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2v9_-4JCh_U&ab_channel=Tips2Fix.

Kind Regards,
