Microsoft Windows XP

Hello! I backed up my old HP  running Windows XP onto an external drive and now, years later, I do not have the HP and I cannot open the files as they are saved with HP Backup and Recovery management program. Can anyone offer a solution? Do I need to find an old HP somewhere and if I did, how would I determine if it was capable of opening the files?

Thanks!

Hi @Oma1954,

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out!

We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.

Sorry for the inconvenience caused don’t worry let me help you.

To better understand the issue, could you please provide a few more details?

  • Do you recall the exact HP Backup and Recovery Manager version you used on Windows XP?
  • Are the backup files showing up as a single large archive (like .fbw files) or as multiple folders?
  • Have you tried opening them on your current Windows system, and if so, what error message do you see?

Steps You Can Try

  • Check File Extensions:
    • HP Backup and Recovery Manager often saved backups as .fbw files. These require the HP Recovery Manager software to restore.
  • HP Recovery Manager Software:
    • If you still have access to another Windows PC, you can try installing the same version of HP Backup and Recovery Manager that created the backup.

I hope this helps.

Hi,

I'm not really sure about which backup program HP used at the time, but I think it was called the Backup and Recovery Manager. I had an HP with a slide in hard drive that I saved everything to. Unfortunately, that drive crashed and I lost some of the files, but I had backed it up and I'm hoping that this long list of backup files can be opened somehow to see if the missing data is there. I  now have a list of abo ut 1100 files, each with a lot of files within it.

These files do not have extensions. Instead, they look like this:

{4A58BF4-13EA-4FA3-97F2-168BB1C20415}

I just bought an old HP on ebay and some recorery software from that time period. It's on its way. I'll let you know how it plays out.

Thanks
