i believe i have the wrong power cord and need to know what cord i need. it beeps three times then four, pauses and goes again for five sets in a row before i get unsupported adapter installed, keyboard error. and then screen shuts off

What I recommend you do is to go on eBay, search by the HP power supply part number and find a used but tested and working genuine HP power adapter. Those usually come with the power cord that goes from the wall socket to the adapter.
