Turn the computer off.

Disconnect the AC power cord.

Hold-down the ON/OFF button for 10 seconds, to "drain" any residual electrical energy.

Reconnect the AC power cord.

Press on the ON/OFF button, and immediately start tapping the ESC key.

What happens?

Do you get to a menu where you can launch the HP Hardware Diagnostics?

If so, launch it, and select the test(s) for the disk-drive.

Tell us the result. Pass? Fail?

hello unfortuneately it led me a place like this

processor type : intel(R)  Core(TM)  i7-2600  CPU @3.40GHz

Process Speed :  3400MHz

L1/L2/L3  Cache Size : 64KBx4  /  256KBx4  /  819KB

Memory Size 12288MB   DDR3  /  1333  MHz  /  Dual  Channel

Channel A :  XMM1  2048 MB  /  XMM2  4096 MB

Channel B :  XMM3 4096  MB /   XMM4 2048 MB

BIOS  Revision/Date : v7.15  03/01/2012

press the ESC key for Startup menu

                                                                                                                                                                             Startup menu

Your RAM will function more quickly if you reorder the RAM sticks to become:

> Channel A :  XMM1  4096 MB  /  XMM2  4096 MB

> Channel B :  XMM3 2048  MB /   XMM4 2048 MB

This is the correct configuration to achieve "dual-channel" mode.

> I've pressed ESC but still nothing happens.

Are you sure that the keyboard's connector is tightly inserted into its slot?

Have you tried a different keyboard?

After viewing that "status" report, does pressing any of the F1-through-F12 keys cause any reaction?

I am having this same issue. I can either get to an HP screen that freezes or one that says:

Processor Type: Intel (R) Core (TM) i7-2600 CPU @ 3.40GHz

Processor Speed: 3400 MHz

L1/L2/L3 Cache Size: 64KBx4 / 256KBx4 / 8192KB

Memory Size: 16384MB DDR3 / 1333 MHz ? Dual Channel

Channel A: XMM1 4096 MB / XMM2 4096 MB

Channel B: XMM3 4096 MB / XMM4 4096 MB

BIOS Revision/Date: v7.15 03/01/2012

and it also freezes. I've tried pressing ESC as soon as the computer starts up, I've tried pressing F8 and shift and out of frustration I've pressed about everything else, uuggg

This computer is loaded with so much information that I can't lose. Please help!!
