We have an HP all-in-one in the office that seems to have encountered an error while updating. It is displaying a white screen with the message "The System BIOS update failed Unable to open BIOS Image file." and then rebooting every ~15 seconds. How would I go about fixing this?

Hi:

It appears that any HP AIO PC with a MonkD motherboard such as yours has, the latest BIOS update fails.

There has to be 30 - 40 posts about this problem in the last two weeks.

The only suggestion I can offer would be to read through this discussion and hope you can get your PC back up and running again.

There is supplemental information below.

HP Desktop PCs - Recovering the BIOS (Basic Input Output System) | HP® Customer Support

Last section.  There is a video at the very bottom of the page that describes how to do this on a notebook PC, and since it is included under the desktop link, perhaps it works the same way.

Install the BIOS recovery file

Restoring the BIOS with a Recovery Flash Drive on HP Notebooks

The easiest thing to try first after you create the USB BIOS recovery drive, would be to follow the instructions that show up after the USB recovery drive has been successfully created.

1. Power off the device to be recovered.

2. Insert the USB flash drive into a USB port.

3. Power on the device.

4. The device may reboot up to 3 times with indicator lights on the keyboard flashing, or the screen appearing blank for short time.

Hello Paul, thank you for the response.

I have downloaded the linked BIOS recovery file, but after installing to my C: drive it does not bring up the HP BIOS Update and Recovery window to create a boot drive from the USB stick I have inserted. Any ideas? Thank you either way for the help already

Thank you again Paul! I was able to figure out the USB drive and it worked flawlessly on the affected machine. For anyone else reading this who cannot get the recovery drive set up on a second computer, I think it needs to be an HP. The Dell I was originally using would not finish the process to load the image on the drive.

You're very welcome.

Glad you were able to restore the BIOS.

That's interesting...I had no problem creating the BIOS recovery drive on my Dell Optiplex 7040 MT.

Other folks have had the same issue, as in this discussion.

I couldn't offer any further help with that.
