Microsoft Windows 8.1 (64-bit)

As a result of an attempt to copy directory "Documents" from a Notebook used whilst travelling back to the desktop PC whilst jet-lagged the root " Documents" directory has ended up labelled "Documents - Duplicate" on the PC.

Is there a way to relabel it back to "Documents" - being a privileged directory it doesn't respond to the usual rename/delete etc functions?

(does a restore created from a restore point include the privilege directory names - I don't think it does but it would be a clean fix if it did)

thanks

solved it - in explorer went into  OS C:  / Users  / username found that there "Documents" appeared as "Documents - Duplicate".

This directory in this location  can be renamed, so I changed it to "Documents".  Then closed and re-opened explorer and the change was reflected in the list of directories under "This PC": Desktop, Documents, Downloads etc

So although root directories can't be renamed directly, they can be indirectly by changing the directory name under the User and the change is then reflected in the list of root directories.

Does the original 'Documents' folder-name still exist?

Can you open the folder:  C:\users\mikerb

What folder-names are displayed?

Your thought is correct.

System Restore restores only the critical Windows "system" files, including any files/folders stored on the 'Desktop'.

yes  - Documents still exists as such, it's only the label displayed in explorer that show the corrupted version.  Also it's the label given to copies made of the directory on backup devices.

The full list under C:\Users\username\  is..  Contacts, Desktop, Documents, Downloads, Intel, Links, Music, One Drive, Pictures, Saved Games, Searches, Tracing, Videos.

fyi - The PC is running 64bit Windows 8.1 upgraded from 8.0 - so it doesn't have the group heading of "Libraries" that appears in later production versions of 8.1.

thanks for yr help

It is sad that you may have taken that response, and then marked your own posting as the "solution".

In the original reply the suggestion was to look at C:\users\username.  As this uses the syntax of the command line that is where I looked for directories.  The list of directories displayed there, and listed in my response above, is only visible at the command line, a reduced subset appears in file explorer.

The reply also made no mention of the connection between the two directory lists in file explorer and that changing the directory name under  OS (C:)  Users  username  would be reflected in the list under "This PC".

So the reply to my query, though appreciated, didn't contribute anything to finding the solution.

However since it seems to matter to you to gain "kudos" I'll change the solution tag as asked.  I'm just content that the problem is resolved.
