thanks Riddle_Decipher !

yes, i did all the permissions things to no avail.

i have workaround options if this ends up being a dead end.

those just make things harder to do.

it's just a shame that the authors, and retailers of the operating system

don't quite get how to truly make the whole shebang user-friendly.

another question if you wouldn't mind;

why does the simplesave 320 show up as a usb connected drive AND

as a cd-rom in device manager, and disk management console ??

have there ever been any reported conflicts, or operation problems associated with this ?

Thank you for responding,

It's great to have you back 😉

I recommend you create a backup of all your data on your HP device,

as there could be a corrupted system file either with the HP SimpleSave drive or the OS on your dell device, considering the multiple instances of your device showing as cd-rom or USB as you've mentioned it.

I suggest reinstalling the windows on your other laptop if you continue to have the issues on one laptop and not on the other, however, if it drive doesn't work on both devices, format the simplesave to resolve the issue.

Keep me posted,

that'll help us and others see that we've got the answers!

Good Luck.

thanks for your interest. these are not laptops, they're desktops.

the dell optiplex gz620 enjoys a fresh win xp pro installation, with all recommended drivers.

it's pristine.

i've narrowed this down to ripping files through win media player 9, or something different between win xp pro, and xp home editions.

somehow media player, wim xp pro, or both have rendered the files, and directories totally hidden from the dell.

these are available on the compaq presario 3000, running win xp home which is where they originated.

what's really puzzling is that the "master" directory (a directory i created, and named; (there was no auto-creation by windows.) the files were copied to vanishes for this computer to computer simplesave drive swap. i have been successful swapping the drive to an old, xp home emacine.

example--on the compaq, under the created "band A" "master directory, multiple sub-directories were created, such as "band A 1977", "band A 1978", "band A 1987", and so on. the compaq shows all of these, they are accessible from the "master" on down.

on the dell they simply aren't there. all from the "master" on down are gone.

on the compaq i can do whatever i want with these files, copy, manipulate, pull them into a audio editor, move to different diectories, however when i switch the simplsave 320 back to the dell, they vanish anyway.

next will probably be to try to copy to a jump drive but---

cd backups probably my only choice to keep the files safe.

what a stumper...

@simplesave1-1, thanks for your quick response and time.

I appriciate your efforts for writing back to us.

Open Device Manager", or "Disk Manager " Click on "Start button" > All Programs>Administrative Tools>Computer Management> Then click on either and see if the device is present.

If the issue persists the software SimpleSave program, is no longer supported.  You cannot any longer download copies of the software from HP.

Or you can contact HP phone support and get assistance.

nice to see you again.

oh, everything is there, it all seems to be fine, however certain directories, sub-directories, and individual files are gone when the drive is attached to the dell.

media player did something during the rip.

i can understand that it could affect the files themselves as they were coming off the cds, as they were being backed up, but i can't get how media player hid the file directories which i created, and named myself. if copy protection is the bottom-line issue here, it sure seeming to be selective between enabling the original presario file system to see the files, and keeping them hidden on the dell.

even text files written to the same sub-directories are unavailable.

folks: thanks for your interest with my simplesave 320 problem. i have found another anomily of the situation, and that is that anything written to the drive after 1 january, 2017 doesn't appear when i swap the drive from the aforementioned compaq presario 3000, win xp home edition to the dell optiplex gx620, win xp pro edition, unless i create a new directory, or write, and store a file to the drive on the dell. boy, i sure would like to access to those files that the dell won't see.. how the heck would the date of creation have anything to do with this? can i change that attribute somehow without moving the files, and directories off the drive, and then moving them back? i tried that one way, and that particular way didn't work. thanks again. as i have not completely lost the files, this is somewhat cumbersome, and a challenge, but it's kind of fun trying to crack this, eh?

@simplesave1-1, thanks for your quick response and time.

I appriciate your efforts for writing back to us.

As you mentioned the issue still persists after trying out the steps.

I would suggest, please try formatting the hard drive once and try copying the files again and check if the folders are getting detected.

Have a great day ahead!

Take Care! 🙂
