after the last window update, my Omen 25L desktop crashed during a startup.  Once it finally started, multiple things are now not working such as my audio.  The most important is the PC unable to do window update, returning the error code 0x800706f4.   I tried re-install Windows using the recovery option, and also tried created a bootable ISO to re-install Windows, both failed.  I also tried to reset my PC twice, one time from Windows and one time from Windows RE, both times it failed.   I also run the command sfc /scannow and it said it found error but cannot repair them.  I also run the command DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth which said the required files cannot be found, so I used the /Sources along with the ISO I downloaded, but it still couldn't fix the corrupted files.   Anyone has another other options I can try?

Thanks.

You may have a defective hard drive or one that has had its "good sector list" badly damaged.

Make sure you can run diagnostics.

Check to see if there is a hardware problem: Watch this video.
Tap the ESC key after powering on. Tap it once a second after you see the LEDs on the keyboard flash. When you see the startup menu, press F2 to run diagnostics. If a component fails during the UEFI test then Click here to check warranty

Run the memory and hard drive tests.  Do a through disk test.  Do not attempt any type of bios upgrade or repair if there is any memory or disk errors!

If the drive and memory tests pass then you need to do as surface scan that repairs the sectors.  This needs to be done before the DISM tool can be used.

Open the win11 Search, type cmd, and select Run as administrator.Type the following command and press Enter:chkdsk C: /f /r  (Replace C: with the letter of the drive you wish to scan). If it is the boot drive, you will be prompted to schedule the scan for the next restart. Type Y and press Enter.Restart your computer to begin the scan.

A video of this is here

Bring windows up in safe mode to run the surface scan.

Click here to see how to start your system in safe mode.

then do the chkdsk from safe mode.  if you cannot get into the windows gui and you end up stuck in a command windows then the "C" drive may be named "X" depending on what windows safe mode was able to do.  This is unusual but it can happen.

Thanks, I will give these steps a try.

I ran a symptom extensive test, the hard drive passed, but it failed at Memory Extensive Check with the following information:

Failure ID: RTXC9T-ALDD3S-QF8V4J-409303

Product ID: 328L3AA#ABA

Memory Module 1: DIMM1

My desktop was purchased many years ago, so I doubt it is still under warranty.  Is the failed memory replaceable?  If so, how do I identify the correct part to purchase and replace?

Thanks.

Possibly just remove the memory, and put it back in

You need to remove all the memory chips and clean the motherboard as best you can with an air duster. You should take some caution to avoid static discharge when removing the memory sticks.

On a desktop system, unplug computer. If the power cord has a transformer (wall wart) unplug from the computer. Press the power button 2-3 times to discharge residual electricity

First blow out as much dust as you can before removing the memory. Once motherboard area is clean, then discharge static electricity by touching a finger to metal frame or case before removing memory sticks.

Clean the memory contacts with eraser, use air duster, reseat memory. Reseat one at a time if necessary to find the bad one.  Some desktop system require that if you are using only one stick of ram, it must go into "slot 0" or "Dimm-1". Typically the socket that must be used is blue and is closest to the CPU but this depends on the model.

An easy way to find what memory you have is to run the wmic app from the windows command prompt. Bring up the window CMD prompt and enter the first line to see what memory you have. The second line may give the maximum memory possible based on the chipset. The number of memory sockets limit what can be added.

wmic memorychip get devicelocator, capacity, speed, MemoryType, formfactor, partnumber, manufacturer

wmic memphysical get maxcapacityEx, MemoryDevices

Should look something like the following. To purchase identical memory search for the part number shown and look for the letters 'HP' on any label attached to the memory stick.

BeemerBiker_0-1777756981628.jpeg

The above values are in bytes. Divide by 1024 twice to get megabytes.
8589934592/(1024*1024) = 8192mb or 8gb

The output of maxcapacityEx is Kbytes, not bytes.

Note that some older systems do not recognize maxcapacityEx even when running latest Windows.

Let me know what you find out.

I removed the memory and use a duster to clean the inside of the desktop, afterward reinserted the memory, but it still failed the memory check.  I identified the part # to be hp32d4u8d8hc-16x, confirmed both by the sticker on the memory and also using wmic.  I was able to find the exact one on ebay, hopefully once I replace it i will be able to fix the other issues.

Thanks.

I am glad you found the problem.   A lot of owner will try bios flash and with bad memory that can brick the system.

Out of curiosity, does your Omen 25L motherboard have a bios restore jumper like my shire2?

I did not notice, but I also wasn't looking.  When I install the new memory, I will try to look for it.
