Hi @Patricia153,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

The message “Selection is locked” in Microsoft Word usually means the document is in read-only mode or your Office license isn’t activated. Here’s how to fix it:

1. Check Document Protection

  • Open Word → File → Info → Protect Document.
  • If it says Restricted Editing, click Stop Protection.
  • If a password is required and you don’t know it, you’ll need the original password.

2. Verify Office Activation

 3. Check File Permissions

  • Right-click the document → Properties.
  • Ensure Read-only is unchecked.
  • If the file came from email or the internet, click Unblock.

4. Repair Office

  • Press Windows + R, type: appwiz.cpl
  • Select Microsoft Office → Change → Quick Repair.
  • If Quick Repair doesn’t work, try Online Repair.

5. If It’s a Trial Version

  • Expired trials lock editing features.
  • Renew or switch to a Microsoft 365 subscription.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have an amazing day!
