@OTAI, Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

When your HP desktop (with a Core i5 8th Gen processor) is asking you to authenticate and save, it could be due to a few different reasons depending on the context. Here are some common scenarios and what they might mean:

Windows Account Authentication

If you're being asked to authenticate and save settings or files, it might be because:

  • You're trying to change system settings that require administrator privileges.
  • You're saving files in a protected location (like C:\Windows or C:\Program Files).
  • You're using a Microsoft account and Windows is syncing settings or requiring re-authentication.

Fix: Make sure you're logged in as an administrator. If you're using a Microsoft account, try signing out and back in, or check your internet connection.

HP Software or BIOS Security

HP desktops often come with:

  • HP Client Security or HP Sure Start, which may prompt for authentication when accessing secure features.
  • BIOS-level security that asks for authentication when making hardware-level changes.

Fix: If it's BIOS-related, you may need to enter a BIOS password or use HP's recovery tools.

BitLocker or Drive Encryption

If your system drive is encrypted with BitLocker, Windows may prompt you to authenticate when:

  • There's a hardware change.
  • You're accessing encrypted files.
  • You're saving settings that affect security.

Fix: Make sure you have your BitLocker recovery key handy. You can find it in your Microsoft account online if you enabled BitLocker with it.

Software or App Permissions

Some apps (especially antivirus, backup tools, or system utilities) may require elevated permissions to save settings or perform actions.

Fix: Right-click the app and choose "Run as administrator".

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
